Why not just get an aftermarket Head Unit? You can get an adapter cable that will plug right in to your factory wiring.

Does your stereo have the CD controller features on the radio station buttons like on the stereo pictured below?

Black Widow- I have a 2000 Sport. It came with factory single CD but it has the ability to control a Factory CD changer. If you have the factory changer - you just need a single factory single CD player form a ranger, explorer or even an F-series between 98-2001.It needs to have the world connectors on back ( two multipin connectors that are side by side forming a L shape in lower corner of back of unit)1 is a long rectangle shaped connector which is audio & power connections. The square connector right beside it- this is the one used to control CD changer as well as for back seat passenger headphone tone & volume control.I recently replaced my single cd with a factory indash 6 pack changer from a ranger ( or F-series) circa 2003. It was plug & play.Maybe that would be an inexpensive option for you. Ebay search Ford Cd Radio- look for the "world connector" on back which is the two square & rectangle connections I described above. It does work. I am happy with it- maybe you would be too.
