Stick to Auto

I am currently looking at an amazing deal on a early 90's ex. The only thing is it's a 5 speed and I would prefer an auto for wheeling. Has anybody swapped out the stick for an auto and is it as big of a project as I think it is? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

it's a hefty project, the auto tranny will be expensive and you'll have to track down the other parts. quite a few people have done the swap though and documented it so just search the forums.

well man, I got an auto, it's OK, but I really wish I had waited until I could find a 5-speed. It's an awesome ride, but man I love manuels.

The first gen (91-94) Explorer trannys were pretty much junk. You are much better off with the 5 speed.

is there any way for u to override the automatic 4wd in the 95 sports transfer case id rather have full time 4wd or 2wd no auto ????

Thanks for the input, I think I'm going to keep the 5speed and maybe try and find some lower gears and wheel it like that for a while. Now I just have to swap out the TTB(it's toast) in front with my dana 30 out of my buddies jeep. shouldn't be too bad.
