Stiff Clutch - grinds going into reverse

You should be able to tell if it's leaking without doing that. Before you pull the tranny, make sure the master isn't leaking as well, make sure it's full of fluid, and you might bleed it just make sure there is no air. If it's down to the slave, than yes, it must be pulled. If you pull it and the slave checks out, you can also check everything else that may be binding in there as well.
 






Yup sounds like the slave cylinder. As far as it being stiff, there's probably nothing wrong with it. A lot of the Explorer clutches get real stiff but nothing is wrong. I had a '91 that got a stiff clutch at 50,000 or 60,000 miles. And it's still going at 137,000 miles. It does need a new slave cylinder I think though as it grinds going into reverse sometimes.
