This owners group has already enabled me to answer several questions that I have about my Explorer but I have a few more that I hope some kind person can answer:)
I have received a copy of a catalogue from Performance Products in America they show an Haynes repair manual (we call them workshop manuals) for the Explorer 1991 -1995 does anyone know if they do an edition after 1995 for my 1997 or will this edition cover my vehicle?

Second should the on/off side and headlight switch lightup?

And thirdly when I start my Explorer I hear a noise from the engine area that sounds like a flap closing is this normal and if so what is it?

Thanks for any help you can give,I am sure that once I have my repair manual it will answer a lot of questions I still have.:p

First question:

You will need a Haynes manual that covers 91-2001 Explorers. Your 97 has a different computer altogether than the 91-95's do.

Do you know who publishes that manual? Is it Haynes?

Yes it's Haynes. It's the best inexpensive repair manual on the market.

Sorry Jason I didnt read your message properly :confuseddo you know of an edition number?

The edition number I have is 36024.

Thanks I will visit my local book shop to see if they have or can get it otherwise I shall try via the internet. Sorry about not reading you message I am still trying to get use to this ??? what do you call it? owners group, newsgroup, owner enthusiast group?

well i call it home. But its also known as the board(s), forum(s) or the "Serious Explorations®" Message Board.

They have Explorers in England, sweeet. I'm from England and I never used to see them. What year is that?

Well Duke16 until a couple of weeks ago I would have said the same but since buying one they now appear all over the place. I think they were only introduced into the UK and Europe in RHD form a few years ago and the latest vertion is the North face model which I believe has been around in America for some time?
I have been looking to buy a 4x4 for sometime now and narrowed it down to either the Explorer and dare I say it in this group the Jeep Grand Cherokee, I know I made the right decision hence her I am in the Explorer Owners Group:bounce:

Mick, I wish Ford has the North Face Edition rather than the Eddie Bauer edition. I personally like North Face products better than Eddie Bauer products. In the US, there're no North Face Edition Explorers. We have Eddie Bauer versions only.

See what I mean guys:confused: still learning I saw the model Eddie Bauer and presumed that it was a modified model or what we call over here a Special that has been heavily modified,or is that what an Eddie Bauer is?

Billy, just viewed your mugshot and picture of your Eddie Bauer Explorer and I am even more:confused:   as your car looks no different than my UK RHD Explorer so perhaps all the Explorers sent to the UK & Europe were Eddie Bauer's?

The North Face edition? That sounds awesome...does it have the logo and pinstripes on the sides too?

Yeah, I think the exported Explorers are like the US Eddie Bauers but with the gray fender flares. The US XLT editions don't have fender flares.

Kontrol-Trak, the North Face Edition is the UK version of the Limited model here in the US.

Well my RHD Uk Explorer has grey around all wheel arches (fender flares?) and grey about 7" at the bottom of all doors just like in Billy's photo of his car, the remainder of my car is a dark metalic blue.If I knew how to send an attachment with this message I would. I have ordered my 1991 - 2000 Haynes repair manual from Amazon and should get it soon

I don't know if you ever got that answered but that's a piston slap. Normal stuff. Just lettin' ya know.

Good to see some members from all over the place, way to represent our board in England!

Take care

Thanks Two Tone but would you get piston slap on an engine that has only done 45,000 mls? The noise I refer to sounds like a flap closing in the ventilation system? My previous car a Ford Granada Mk 3 ( don't know if they had them in the USA) had a control that allowed you to close off a flap to the outside air thus allowing air to be recycled through a filter.

Hmm, I could be wrong with that. If it sounds like the ventilation system, I honestly have no idea. The piston slap is a kind of clicking sound when you accelerate right after starting the truck up. You would get that on a low mileage engine, my dad's got it when it had about 55-60k on it.

Two Tone, since receiving your last message I have been listening to this noise that I get from the engine compartment and are now wondering does the Explorer have some sort of pressure relief valve for either the power steering pump or the air con?
I have ordered my Explorer 91-2001 repair manual from Amazon.com so I should receive it soon, still hoping to get a couple of other questions answered from my previous messages in the mean time?
