I just replaced the switch on the dash on my 91 explorer and the D*** thing still won't go into 4 wheel drive. Any help Guys?

Sounds like the shift motor needs to be cleaned. I've never had to (**knock on wood**) but there are some threads (maybe in the usefull threads section) that will tell you how...just use the search function and it'll tell you how. Hope that helps!

It could be a lot of things. The shift motor would be one of the first things I'd look at.

I've been there and down that road several times.

I would guess 99% of the time it is the shift motor. The shift motor is actually 2 parts. The worm driven motor and the positon sensor. The Position sensor is notorious for getting "lost". This occurs because the plastic stop inside the sensor breaks apart over time and allows the sensor to travel slightly outside its operating range. If this happens then the the 4x4 computer module next to rear washer fluid reservoir will have no idea what position the T-cases is in and will shut down and do nothing.

You should read the info on the edu site and then take the wire harness off the shift motor and test for 4H continuity amount the various pins.

Hey guys, Thanks again for all the help. When I finally got the shift motor out and tore it apart the brushes were dirty. So I took some emery cloth and cleaned up both the brushes and the armature.
Before I reinstalled the motor I plugged it in and tried it and I saw the little motor turn the shifter.
I was so happy I could have thrown a party.
Thanks again to all that replied.
Mark
