I am running a MTX TE801D Amplifier hooked up to a Alpine Type-X in my 94 explorer...i used Stinger 4 guage power wire, and my battery guage jumps at high volumes even when i am driving, and the sub will clip when at high volumes. i was told that that was due to not enfough power going to the amp....i purchased a used Stinger SP800 dry cell stereo battery. When i was hooking up the battery, i just took the power wire out of the amplifier and hooked it up to the pos terminal on the stinger battery, and then ran a cable from the pos term of the stinger to the amp. i have noticed that there is a little less jumping in the battery guage, but the sub still clips at high volume. im trying to get the most out of the sub (the amplifier is only 3/4 turned up). is there something else i should be doing? im thinking of upgrading the ground wire around the alternator and batt, but i dont want to burn it up.

upgrade your big three...I have a 1200 watt rms amp and I don't need an extra battery.

How is your gain set relative to the source???

Gain being 3/4th's up means absolutely nothing.

Also the sub cannot clip...the amplifier would be clipping if pushed too hard.

Sounds like your gain is set too high. Use a DMM and test tones to set your gains correctly. JL Audio has a good tutorial on their site that will help you do this. You could also just go by ear. If you can hear it clipping, turn the gain down until it's not clipping anymore. I've never been able to actually hear clipping in my setups, so I just set everything using a DMM. Chances are, you won't need you gain turned up that high.

^X2. If your amp is truely clipping, then you need to turn the gain down. Clipping is caused by over driving the amp, not by not getting enough power to the amp.

an amp will clip sooner if it is power starved with low voltage

what can i do to combat the clipping? i am going to pick up a Optima yellow top on wednesday and replace my battery i bought at Sears...what else should i be doing?
