Hi, Im new here and your forum structure is a bit different from other automotive forums, So i think this is the right place to post.

Anyway, I just bought a 99 sport base model the other day. It has power locks (didnt they all?)

I would like to add a factory keyfob remote to the truck. I dont really care about the keypad, I have it on my tbird and love it, but would rather have a remote on this one.

I know the aftermarket has one, but why buy trash when you can use OEM?

Not sure if this is a big huge everlasting project or not. If its a plug and play kinda deal Im interested. But something thats going to take cutting, severe splicing, or anything that makes me uncomfey i have no problem using the key like Ive always had to on my cars. :)

Thanks!

Does your exp have the keypad on the door?

Hm, idk if yours would have stock keyless then...I thought they all did, but im not a genius :p

I know the guy I bought mine from gave me one worn out key, no remote, mine has stock keyless entry, a remote start, and alarm, so out of 2 keys, and 3 remotes, I have one key lol.

Im gonna order some OEM keyfobs off eBay, theyre like 15$ a piece, and you can program them yourself....are you trying to install a keyless entry module (OEM)?

Thats the best route if you ask me lol

I dont think it has any stock keyless as it sits. Im pretty much asking If I want to ground up make my explorer have stock ford keyfobs what is nessisary (if its even possible)

I would try step one below. If your door locks cycle it's a good chance your vehicle came with KE. Turning the key to OFF will terminate the programming mode.

If you know someone with an Ex in the same year range as yours, you can see if you can program your Ex with their fob. If it works, get you own fob(s) and program them to your Ex. This will render their fob useless on your vehicle. If you can't make it work, then you most likely don't have KE. It shouldn't change their fob but they can always program it back to their vehicle using the same process.

This procedure works for 2000 models. It should work for yours as well.
1. Insert a key in the ignition and turn from OFF to ON(not started) 8 times within 10 seconds ending with the key in the ON position. The doors will lock/unlock to confirm that the programming mode has been entered.
2. Within 20 seconds, program a remote transmitter by pressing any button on a transmitter. The doors will lock/unlock to confirm remote transmitter has been programmed.
3. Repeat step 2 to program additional remote transmitters. Again, the doors will lock/unlock to confirm that the remote transmitter has been programmed.
4. When you have finished proamming the remotes, turn the key to OFF. Again, The doors will lock/unlock to confirm that the programming has been completed.

Good Luck

mine is a 99, method didnt work.

My aunt was the orig owner and it never had fobs, which is why I just want to know whats plug and play about the keyless fob entry system.

I know they wouldnt put KE modules in a car that didnt order that option..

NO keypad or key fobs came with the truck from the factory.

I cant seem to make this clear, what do i need to fob this truck up?

My 96 Explorer didn't come with keyless entry either. I checked with a Ford tech friend about just plugging in a factory keyless system.
He told me if it wasn't installed at the factory, you're SOL because most of the required modules and harnesses aren't installed in the vehicle. It would be a major PIA to gather all the required modules and harnesses and then splice them into the vehicle.
You have to go with an aftermarket kit like I had to.
I bought a kit from here... Explorer Express ...about 8 years ago.
It came with a special harness to tap into the factory door lock system without having to cut wires.
They don't list it on their website anymore but they might be able to steer you in the right direction to find one.

my 98 XLT 5.0 has the key pad on the door....can I add a key fob to it? Sure would rather use a fob vice the key pad .....

Thanks

Yessir you sure can, thats part of the keyless entry, if you didnt have the keyless entry you wouldnt have the keypad...well im like 99.9% sure, but order a set of (usually 2) key fobs on eBay for about 18$ shipped...

Even if you do have to tap wires, it's not that hard to do. I helped my dad install a keyless entry system in the Explorer years ago, before it was mine. It was a fairly simple install and all the wires you need are easily accessed behind the driver's knee and kick panels.

Some people have found that when the bought their Explorers used they did have the OEM system, just no fobs. Look in the jack compartment to see what you have. If you have the keypad then you have the module. There will also be a sticker on the module with the master code in case you don't know what the keypad code is.

If you don't have the keypad nor the module in the jack compartment you'll have to add an aftermarket kit. The one my dad had was the Code Alarm CSI-100; I later removed it in favor of a fancier system. Advance Auto once carried DEI's do-it-yourself kit but they pulled it from the shelves after it turned out to be crappy.

No, it should be the same module. They say that because the keypad was standard on EB models but optional on XLT.

Okay, So lets say I gather all the modules. WHAT DO I NEED TO GRAB There are a ton of explorers in the junkyards around where I live. I dont mind grabbing any modules or wireing nessisary to add stock keyfobs to my truck.

Im one of those "keep it origional" guys, aftermarket dosent float my boat. ( which is why i just spent $150 to replace my broken armrest)

So, Obviously theres a transmitter receiver somewhere in the truck, is that the master module located behind the rear panel? I dont care if I get door button abilities, I'm not putting the keypads on my doors, just the key-fob transmitter on my keyring.

Ill snag whatever wiring I need out of a junker. I just need to know if this is a matter of finding modules, or do I have to completely change out my current electrical system?

Im not trying to be a jerk here, but I do know it does not have any form of Keyless entry. I just want to know what ford parts or part numbers I need to find, or if my truck is just tottaly not able to receive stock keyless entry without swapping out the entire electrical system.

Read my post. I've been on this thing for two weeks and gave it up. I've brought a EB rap module and the whole harness even the door keypad and transferred it to my 95 one without factory keyless. The problem is if your truck do not have keyless, most likely your GEM module will not have the green/purple wire to disarm the system. That's why after after I transferred everything, traced the 30+ colored wires from the original Explorer from the back to the firewall and followed BigCountry instructions to a tee and the big disappointment is two crucial wires do not exist in non-keyless Explorer.
I listed the whole RAP module/harness/antenna/keyfob/door keypad in CL for 150.00.

where is the gem module? what year truck did the harness come from? I could see wires added to the system as years went on, so I would understand I would only want equip from a 99 donor.

95 to a 95. Believe me, I went through it all. I spent so much time and money at the junkyard salvaging every piece of wires and screws for this thing. The GEM is on the left of your radio with a total of 4 plugs. It controls all accessories and electrical stuffs. I've been posting for help on that particlar wire but no reply whatsoever and went through every page of the original factory manual. No green/purple wire on your GEM 26 pins plug, no can do on the RAP. Can no longer contact Big Country since he's on longer on the forum anymore, he's the member who did the whole writeup on it.

Make sure you got a 3 plugs on the side and one plug on the bottom on your GEM module before doing the job. Read Big Country writeup on it, it mentioned the Explorer Sport at the end of his installation instruction.
