My stock 1993 4x4 suspesension has just statred to speak, creak, groan and all manner of bad noises. I took a look underneath and nothing seems to be wrong, but the noise is drving me crazy. Is there anyting down there that needs to be lubed? Which parts and what type of grease?

Could my shocks be gone? How can I tell?
They're stock with 66K on them.

Thanks Guys.

Your shocks are most likely (99% sure) bad. There are grease fittings that need to be lubed in the front suspension. They look like air fittings, but with grease around them. I am not sure the exact type of grease, but your local parts store can help you out with that. You will need a grease gun to put the grease in though. Also, I would look at the bushings. If they are hard and cracked they are probably bad and would need to be replaced.

Which set of bushings? the one;s on the shocks or somewhere else?

Squeakin...

Hey Neuman, you may want to check out the rivets which hold the crossmember, radius arm brackets and pivot brackets to the frame. A lot my problems with noises were occurring after trips to the trails. I found that all the noise was usually coming from the rivets wallowing the holes in the frame and allowing too much flex. Popping and squeaking were the results. Check it out...

Annoying sqeaking

I think I have the same problem on my stock 91 Sport with 167,000 miles. It only seems to happen when going over deep ruts, sudden changes in road grade, etc. When I'm driving it sounds like its coming from the rear but lying underneath and bouncing the frontend it definitely sounds like its coming from the front rightside. The shocks were replaced recently free of charge at NTB (storebrand standard gas shocks but they were free). Should I be looking at these or the rivets and what should I be looking for as far as the rivets go?

Thanks-this site is excellent reading!!

Squeeks...

I had the same noise from my 94 XLT with 169K miles. The Radius Arm Bushings were guilty. Made lots of noise and alignment kept going out ( Pull to the side )It was about $20 bucks for the bushings and $150 for the shop to replace them. I didn't want to fight with them and they are aligning it too.

Good Luck

Re: Squeeks...

I had the same problem with mine, before I replaced the shocks...I knew I was gonna replace them, so in the mean time, I just took a little WD-40, and hit all of the rubber-i.e., the sway bar bushings etc, and it was fine for about a week until i did it again...replaced the shocks and it is fine now.
