Hey guys,

Hopefully somebody will have some ideas as to what happened. I am the owner of a '91 EB in good condition. Not too long ago I was driving down the road and all of a sudden my sub stopped working. The sub is stock (built into the right side in the back), but I'm assuming I have the upgraded sound system option as other Explorers I've seen have a little compartment there.

I still have sound through all four speakers, but no bass...and let me tell you, it sounds horrible. Any ideas? Thanks for any help guys.

Yes. This is a great excuse--err, reason--to get a new sound system! :D

Seriously, tho...yank the stock head unit and those paper speakers, and you'll be surprised with how much better sounding your truck can be! There are several aftermarket free-air subs which will fit in the JBL location, but you will have to upgrade at least the head unit & amp.

Radioshack sells a 6.5" speaker that will fit in the enclosure for $20.00. The Ford dealership sells the JBL speaker that is in there for $82.00 (just the speaker).

Those are two options that will fix the problem without having to swap anything out. When you go to swap the speaker (if that is what you do) you have to pull that whole panel off to get at the screws. Don't try to pry the grill off, you'll break the tabs that hold it in (or you could pry it off and glue the grill back on).

If the amp is bad though, you might be up a creek. I don't know what Ford charges for those.

Dead Link Removed

I did the Radioshack sub, it's better than the stock one. Someone else posted this link before, it looks better than the Radioshack and fits the 6.5" - do a search for more info

Thanks guys

Thanks for your suggestions. I found a friend that will sell me his two enclosed 12" subs plus Pioneer amp for $200, so I figure I'll take that route and hopefully pick up some speakers too.

Any suggestions in that department? Another friend put some Sony X-plods in his Wrangler that looked pretty cool and would closely match my red exterior, but if you have any better ideas, I would appreciate your input. Thanks again guys!
