I just got through cleaning the IAC motor on my wife's 95 XLT 4.0 Explorer. I have done this twice before and it did improve a slightly rough idle.

Well, after putting it back on and starting it up, theres this wierd humming sound coming from under the hood!

Yeah, the idle IS better, but that humming is driving me nuts!

I took the unit back off and looked it over, wondering if I had gotten something inside the unit or not tightened something down correctly, but everything looks fine. The idles is smooth and it drives fine...no Check Engine light or anything funky.

Once the Ex warms up, it seems to go away, but it shows up again if it sits for any lenght of time.

So...whats up wiith the humming? Has anyone else had this happen? How'd you cure it?

Can the IAC motor go bad over time? (hey it DOES have 135K miles on it and IS 6 years old!...maybe its shot for good?)

If it goes bad or is faulty, does it HAVE to trigger the Check Engine light or throw a code of some sort? (I wouldn't think so)

How long does the typical IAC module last? Are they expensive to replace?

Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks!

Might be time to replace IAC

When my Explorer began to hum, it seemed to come from the air filter box. Ford replaced my IAC (under warranty) and that fixed the problem. Mine only lasted about 35,000 miles. Since you've already cleaned the IAC, I'd suggest replacing it next. I don't think it's much more than $50 or so...

I thought it was like $100 bucks from torrie at fordpartsnetwork.com. do a search "IAC", this problem has been discussed before, and you should get additional info.

When you put it back on did you use a new gasket? Maybe the gasket has been squished down once too many times, causing it to leak?

thanks...but...

...there was no gasket (?!?) on the IAc module. Does the dealership sell just a gasket, or do I need to buy the whole enchilada?

Also, a car/engine savvy friend also suggested checking my MAP sensor for my rough idle and bad mileage while I am in there...anyone know what or where this is? Can it be cleaned as easy as the IAC module?

Thanks,

Did he mean MAS, not MAP?

I've never had a reason to take mine off so I don't know for sure if there is a gasket. There might be an o-ring instead. Regardless, I would think there should be something there to seal it to the intake manifold. If it does have a seal of some kind, NAPA might be your best chance for finding it. I've had better luck finding stuff at NAPA that I couldn't find anywhere else but Ford. Ford should sell just the seal also.
