I have a 91 XLT - 4L, auto tranny

The last few weeks I've had a strange clicking noise coming from what I think is the transmission. The noise only occurs while driving and in gear - never while jsut idling in park. The clicking comes and goes, but almost always happens when I first put it in gear in the morning (one loud click) or when I accelerate hard.

The click doesn't sound like a rattle or anything is loose - a lot more like an electical spark or pop in terms of sound. I thought it might be the speedo cable, but I'm not sure if it even has one ?? I guess it could be something in the tranny or a u-joint. Any suggestions??

Thanks for your help!

does the clicking speed up as your engine RPM's increase? because thats what mine does and i STILL have no clue what it is. its especially loud when the car is cold and i have not warmed it up before driving.

it's the u-joints

I think I've figured out that its the u-joints. At 118,000 miles, its probably time for new ones.
