I have a 1998 Mountianeer 4.0 4x4 that recently began making a strange sound. It almost sounds like a power steering pump noise like when the fluid gets low. The only problems I have with it being the pump are listed below.
1. It doesn't make the noise when it's sitting at idle.
2. It doesn't make the noise when in drive, holding brake (like I'm power braking) and giving it gas (don't think it's transmission due to this).
3. It only seems to do it when I'm moving.
4. The sound seems to change slightly each time the transmission shifts and only while accelerating.
It seems to come from the passenger's side front. I really don't think it's the tranny either since it shifts smooth and I've never had problems with it.
I replaced the driver's side wheel bearing about six months ago. Could it be the passenger side bearing? Any help woudl be great.
