I have a 1998 Mountianeer 4.0 4x4 that recently began making a strange sound. It almost sounds like a power steering pump noise like when the fluid gets low. The only problems I have with it being the pump are listed below.

1. It doesn't make the noise when it's sitting at idle.
2. It doesn't make the noise when in drive, holding brake (like I'm power braking) and giving it gas (don't think it's transmission due to this).
3. It only seems to do it when I'm moving.
4. The sound seems to change slightly each time the transmission shifts and only while accelerating.

It seems to come from the passenger's side front. I really don't think it's the tranny either since it shifts smooth and I've never had problems with it.

I replaced the driver's side wheel bearing about six months ago. Could it be the passenger side bearing? Any help woudl be great.

Sounds like a Hub bearing assembly...lots of info on how to do it here..simple to unbolt and replace..they usually go in pairs...

Would the assembly change with the shifting of the transmission? I replaced the driver's side assembly earleir this year and it didn't make anywhere near that kind of sound. There is also no noise when I let off the accelerator lamost as if it's related to intake, only it doesn't make it at idle with the vehicle in park. I have to be moving.

Could it be an intake issue tha tonly presents itsself when there is a load placed on the engine like being in gear?

I'm just thinking "out loud" to my self.

I've been working on cars for over 25 years and this baffles me.

Ok, Moving under load front right...

the cv shaft would grind under load ..i would check the shaft...

It wasn't really a grinding noise. It sounded more like an exhaust leak or when the PS pump is low on fluid. I would actually chalk it up to an exhaust leak except I only hear it when I'm moving.

I'll start tearing into it tomorrow to see what I can find.

Are you referring to the wooooo - vacumn cleaner noise?
There is a video about that one. Sorry I lost track of it, but it was easy to search for.
