strange speed problem

Ok so I have 2 rather interesting problems right now.

Sometimes my speedometer does not register the cars speed until it gets above 20mph then the gauge shoots up to 20 mph. the gauge is also never steady at any speed it moves…. For example I can be doing 60mph and it will move between 60mph and 65mph.
im thinking vss? remember this is a 97 4x4 4.0 sohc explorer.....

Its also effecting the cruise control too…. If you apply the cruise control the accelerator moves up and down with the fluctuation on the gauge.


My rpm gauge is also playing up. Sometimes it seams only a little tap on the accelerator will move the gauge right up to 3,000rpm or more.

Any ideas?

I've got a similar tach issue - it seems whatever controls it is binding...it'll hold at 1200 and then shoot up to 2800 on accel, and then stick until i come to a complete stop, where it suddenly drops down - very abrupt. I haven't looked into it very thoroughly, so i've got no answers at this point.

not 100% sure but i dotn think its binding... i think it is electronic, not cable actuated like in the old days

yeah its electronic for sure.... there are a bunch of computer like cables behind the dash....nothing more.

Smokegrinder, sounds like your vehicle speed sensor. Thats what feeds the speed info up to your speedo / computer.

Know how to fix this

bump! Not to highjack this tread but my x is doing the same thing. In addition the tranny is erratic in tandum with the speedometer bounceing up and down. When useing cruse control it fluctuates so bad I turn it off, its like a freakin rollercoaster ride!
