i have a 91 explorer eb it has 96k miles on it but it stays in 1st gear till it is warm unless i shift it manually and if i do that bef it is warm about 2-3 miles down the road it is fine in first and 2nd but in drive and od it slips until it is warm any suggestions would be great as this is my only vehicle right now and it kinda a pain to drive at 20mph on my way to work till it is warm

i forgot to mention this it will only shift if i let off the gas peddle

wow is the transmission fluid level okay? (check it when its warm and idling)

keep it out of OD if your not on the highway, i know thats known to cause problems

i believe this is a problem with the shift linkage. but i dunno, ive never owned a auto..

transmission level is perfect and i just did a tranny service on it and put 24oz of lucas stop slip in it

Sounds like a stuck governor. Do a search for a4ld rebuild diary. I think it section 2 (might be section one) that has the tear down including what the governor looks like and how to clean it.

On a 4x4 truck you have to pull the xfer case to get to it. (you don't have to pull teh tranny). I'm not sure what you pull (problably the extension housing) to get to it on a 4x2.

^^Agreed^^. Its a stuck governor.

I had the same problem with my 92, would not shift out of 1st gear when cold unless I shifted manually, then after warm up it shifted ok. Cleaned out the governor and all is fine.
Look under explorer maintenence for a how to do. I think thats where I found it.
