I just tested my 4WD after not using it for a long time. It's completely stuck. I've done the procedure to get it out by stopping, putting the truck in neutral and waiting for disengagement. After several times it's still stuck.
The dealer said it might be a stuck 4WD motor. Any ideas or shortcuts on how to remove it, clean it and get it back in high range without towing it in for repair?

It's a 1998 with auto, 4 high and 4 low selections. 4.0 SOHC motor.

I'd first try cleaning the shift motor contacts. If you crawl under there you'll easily find it. I used some electrical connection cleaner spray on my GFs.

If that doesn't help... then it could be a tougher problem. ie motor, switch, tcase

The switch indicates it is changing modes on the dashboard. It just does not come out. I tapped on the shift motor to no avail. Took it in for service but I'll insist they clean the old one up for starters.

mine does this sometimes. if i jiggle the wires in the harness some, it usually fixes it. i think the harness is just dirty or there is a short in a wire down there. i haven't looked that closely yet.
