Does anyone have a problem with their Explorer 'stumbling' when hitting the gas? When taking off from a stop, the engine shakes a little and almost stalls before reving up. Sometimes, when I'm shifting from forward to reverse, the engine will stall completely.

My experience with older vehicles tells me that I have a vacuum leak or the engine is getting too much fuel, but I know that probably isn't exactly whats going on.

Any troubleshooting suggestions would be appreciated -- and yes, I've already Seafomed -- twice!

Try cleaning the IAC valve.

Sounds like a Fuel pressure problem - dirty injectors? clogged filter?

Pull the vacuum hose for the fuel pressure regulator off, and check it for raw fuel. If it's wet inside, the FPR is bad.

I'm going to try and get in a friend's garage tomorrow and check this stuff out -- I would have done it today but I live in Western NY and we've become the new Seattle (it rains every f'n day).

I need to locate the FPR and the IAC -- I bought a Haynes manual today but it didn't have the detail I was looking for. I wish there was a manual for just like 96-01 Ex's or something, the one I got was for like Model T through 2005 Expedition.

okay I think that I can handle this one....IAC that is,

If you are looking at the engine from the front take the black plastic cover that is on top of the engine (intake cover), you will see a silver colored thing located towards the back of the engine but still, on top with two bolts, one on each side...that is the Intake air control valve....take it off and clean it..then replace it on the intake...

Hey -- thanks for the info. And as soon as I get done draining the pond out of my basement I'll try it!

OK -- I tore it apart tonight and the IAC is fine. It was fairly clean (I cleaned it out completely before putting it back on), and it had the right amount if resistance between the connections.

I was looking for the vacuum line on the FPR, but it looks to me like it only has an electrical connection going into it. Is this right for a 2001?

Its looking like I might have to just take it to the shop, I really dont' want to though. If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know.

Thanks,
Blue
