I've only heard of them on vehicles with manual transmissions. It's on the clutch pedal, and keeps you from starting in gear without first pushing in the clutch.

Its supposed to be part of the Park/Neutral switch on early 1st gen. Its part of the Transmission Range sensor on 2nd gen.
