You could go custom box with shallow mount subs. That would cost some good money tho. When I had subs in my x, i just road with the 3rd seat down all the time. Sacrafice but when you have 2 L7 15s it's well worth it....

I was having the same issues with my explorer. If you remove the passenger side rear panel you will find the factory subwoofer box.

Now the box has a 8'' woofer in it.

You can easily mount a shallow mount 8'' in the factory box and it will give you a great sound. I dont know how loud you want it, but this is a great low cost option that doesnt require a lot of modification. All you really have to do is run cables, add some polyfil to the box and mount the sub.

On my Explorer this is what I did to fit a 10'' JL 10w1. When you remove the box, you will see a cavity built into the body of the truck, on the bottom of that hole I cut off about 3 inches to increase the size. I then applied a nice layer of dynamat to help with sound.

For the actual enclosure I cut a whole in the back and used fiber glass to extend the box into the cavity I was telling you about. This extension is what gives you the room to fit a larger sub. After that I made a few measurements and cut the original opening to fit the sub. I added a 10'' speaker ring and fiberglassed that in with a few supports.

The sub sits behind the factory panel and you could never tell it was even there. Now this box is not ideal for sound quality, but unless you are an audiophile you will like the increase in bass.

i went with the jl audio stealthbox which sits on the left side cargo area...its pretty expensive but just like you i didnt want to give up my cargo space...the stealthbox does not fit with the rear ac option so if you have that in your ex its def not going to work and it says it doesnt work with the 3rd row but i customized it a little...the piece of the 3rd row that slides up and down behind the seat, had to be cut 1/2" on the left so when you slide up the 3rd row, it doesnt hit the stealthbox...its a tight fit but works for me...ill try and get you a pic of mine tomorrow...

I had a truck box, like one than would go behind a standard cab truck seat and it fit perfectly between the third row and my hatch ( i said "had" because people have sticky fingers and like to bust out my windows and steal things)

sounds good...you def get bass out of it

thanks, yea iv heard of the factory sub on the rear passenger side id have to check it out. and yes im not looking for anything expensive so anything to save money would help. the stealth-box is nice but iv seen some one i think it was on this site that but a sub in the rear passenger storage hole (the one with the net) do you guys know anything about that, and subwwofer wise what size would be could or what type, i was looking into the bazooka sub, any ideas?

My Explorer has the third row and I have a 10in sub in the back. The sub sits face down. and when i flip up my third row i just flip up the sub and it fits perfectly between the seat and the hatch with room to spare on the other side of the sub. I put rubber stobs on the box so when the sub is facing down it does not hit the floor when its pounding.

that sounds like a good idea, can you post a pic of it? and hows the sound quality?

sound quality (at least to me) is a big issue here because placement/position of the box, depending on the type you use, will make your exspensive audio sound flat and sub par. if you want more space, get smaller subs. If your looking for spl then a sacrifice will need to be made. Remember you can always remove anything you put in without any real trouble. :D

im not really looking for anything to big just a little extra boost.

If you have the folding middle row with the 30/20/30 split seats take out the six bolts that hold the seat in place and remove...

then drop a sub box in where the seats used to be...

i have 2 10" Subs in a HUGE ported box, 6 seats, and when you fold them down, i lost no cargo space...

PM me if you have any questions...

Hey, sorry I'm chiming in a bit late but there is another awesome option to saving the 3rd row without going the shallow sub route. Here's the thread on my sound system http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=283647.

I have a JL 8W7 in the JL spec vented box. Fits like a charm with the 3rd row up, and I promise it sounds better and gets louder than a shallow sub. The W7 pounds and placement firing upwards works well since it's against the surrounding walls and not out in the open. Only downer is that my amps take up a bit of the legroom in the 3rd row, but other than that it's a perfect setup.
