1995 Explorer XLT
Hi all! I've a Keypad/Key Fob issue here for my 1995 Ford Explorer XLT... key fob will no longer lock/unlock. Assumed a battery issure. BEFORE replacing I noticed the KEYPAD IS NO LONGER LIT and non-responsive. Was working fine with factory code the last time we tried maybe a month or so ago. Usually unlocked with key fob. Thought maybe it was fuse related since both issues seemed to pop-up at same time. The only labels that might apply seems to be for "anti-theft". All of those fuses were in tact. Can't check the 2-3 "ant-theft" relays on my own unfortunately - not like fuses. They looked to be in perfect condition to the naked eye. Big assumption that "anti-theft" has something to do with it I suppose. No unusual dashboard indicators or warnings. This '95 Explorer has only about 120k miles and in GREAT shape, was babied by the original owner (my Dad).

Any ideas out there? Thanks in advance for any tips or guidance!!

The Fobs and key pad run through the RAP system maybe check the fuses as a start? Fuse #20 interior fuse box and fuse #12 under hood box.

Thanks 1sicbronconut, I checked those fuses first thing, prior to posting here. Both appeared in perfect condition. I noticed that there is a relay panel listed in my user manual related to the "anti-theft" system. Possible it's one or more of those relays? Or maybe the RAP module needs to be replaced? Doors still lock and unlock via the door buttons FYI.

You RAP module might be failing. I had a problem where my fob stopped working, then worked kinda, then nothing. Door keypad nothing. I replaced mine with a junkyard unit with the same part number. Works fine.

Thanks toypaseo. I think you may be right. Were you able to replace easily, or was it difficult, many steps removing the interior quarterpanel etc? I will start contacting local junk yards and/or online searches for a replacement RAP module. Wish me luck!

As far as I know, you should match part numbers on the RAP module. Part number might be on a yellow tag wrapped around some of the wiring that plugs into it.

As for replacement, you could make the job easy by just unplugging old unit, plug in replacement unit, and zip tie it to something to keep it from moving around. I think I zip tied my replacement temporarily just to see if it would work, then mounted it where it should be after it stayed working.

Was there a TSB about the seats needed to be grounded to prevent
a voltage spike back to the RAP?

I read that in a few threads while researching this issue. So hard to know if that was the problem, could have been the cause, who knows?

FYI to all and thanks! Today I pulled a RAP from a local junkyard -- worked right away with keypad and new code labelled on the RAP unit. Now only to try and reprogram the key fob. Interesting that the unit I pulled did not have a power input. My original unit did. Still works, and that power cable is now just sitting in their with top wrapped in electrical tape.
