well i know the cobra uses a 6 speed tremec transmission versus the auto 5 speed that the 12V 4.0L V6 and the 24V 4.6L V8 use... ud probably be able to bolt ur stock one to it but im not sure if it is compatible or if it could handle that power... others here may be able to tell u whether or not ur stock transmission can handle 390 horses... well unless of course u modify that V8 and put down some pretty impressive numbers

Like BigApple said the tranny is very important. iirc the 4.0 uses the same 5r55w that the 4.6 uses. If you want to keep the 5speed you are going to have to have it built. You could also get a built 4r70w if you plan on adding MORE power afterwards. You're probably going to have to make some other driveline modifications not sure what, Rocket or james would prolly know better.

Instead of replacing the whole engine with a Cobra motor, what is involved in fitting the same Eaton M112 supercharger onto a stock 4.6 V8. Obviously I would have the charger, but what other bits are needed, and is a tune required?

whole fuel system (pumps, rails, injectors)
upper intake manifold
not sur eif compression ratio will be an issue
cooling/ignition
a good dyno tune
the list goes on and on

i havent been on these boards in a year or two but theres was a guy named rocket who threw a built VT engine with a kenne bell in his ex and he did countless hours of fitting and fabbing for this to work, iirc he did put down some impressive numbers but the tranny wouldnt take it. is it really worth it? to spend 10-15k and many many hours to go forced induction on an ex?

all you'd need for a moderate gain is your tuning device, bigger injectors. Everything else would cope easily for some impressive dyno numbers and street improvements

You will not be able to keep your total cost under $10k if you want to swap the Cobra motor with its trans over to the X. About the only way you could do it for less than that is if you found a wrecked terminator for a REAL good deal and did ALL work yourself. I don't know if even I could do that swap for less than $10k and I do projects like this quite often.

Rather than doing a pretty sizable and custom project like the one you mentioned in your first post why don't you just do a custom supercharger project onto your stocker 4.0? While it will not be able to make the power the Terminator engine is capable of it will still be able to put down some pretty respectable power. RPCaster from the Ranger site make custom intake manifolds to allow an Eaton M90 to be bolted onto the Explorer/Ranger 4.0 V6 engine. There was a member who did the M90 onto his gen 3 4.0 V6 Explorer not long ago. Search around for it if interested.

Just remember that if you end up planning to go for the big power (500+rwhp) that it will cost quite a bit of money. There are allot of "smaller" upgrades that need to be done to support the bigger ones making the power. It all adds up pretty quick. There is NOTHING except for the rear end that is stock within the drivetrain of my Exploder. Everything has been upgraded to hold around 1,000hp just in case I decide to push it that far in the future. Trust me when I say that most would vomit with disgust if I actually disclosed the dollar amount that I have spent on parts alone for this truck; let alone the amount of hours or wrenching I have invested. If you want serious power you will end up having to pay the price. $10k will probably not be enough for what you intend to do when it is all said and done. Best of luck with whatever you do.

Hehehehe. Just started pulling it back apart to do the Modular Powerhouse heads, blower cams, fuel cell and A1000 fuel system as we speak.

I would be happy to race ya, but I got to warn you I should be hitting about 600+rwhp on the blower alone before nitrous so it may not be a fair run for ya. :burnout:

Can we just get it over with already?? Someone please award this man the "Sickest SUV ever" title??

I would LOVE to see some vids of u running the Ex.

And to the OP: Why don't you check out the 4v 4.6L V8 that the Aviator uses. Stock it pushes out 300hp @ the crank and will DEFF work with the 5r55w.
