I have a 96 XLT 4X4,with a 4.0 engine, I would love to find a supercharger for this engine. I've only found one and that was a BBK,but I heard that they are no longer making this unit. So I'm wondering would it be easier just to do an engine swap with a 5.0 engine and be able to find the components I want such a Kenne Belle system.

I don't think it would be easier to do a 5.0 swap. You would need a new transmission too to match the new motor I think, but I could be wrong about that. It would also take longer and more work than a supercharger.

You can still get the BBK I think....try Summit or Truckperformance.com.

You might also try the Vortech. It's a little bit more money but it is also a GREAT kit.

I don't know what mods you have already but if you put in a different camshaft while you're working on the motor you will get even more power out of it, especially the 4.0.

Talk also to the guys on Rangerpowersports.com in their 4.0 V-6 tech forum....they know quite a bit about the BBK, vortech, and 4.0 stuff in general....they taught me a great deal.

The explorer 5.0L swap is really easy, but you will have a fortune into it, as you need a complete 5.0L engine, trans , transfer case donor with everything attached. I have to have $3500-4000 into my basic swap. As for the 5.0L supercharger, you are stuck with the powerdyne or a custom job. The Kenne Bell I run has a mustang intake, but custom from drive, drive support bracket, idler mount, coil pack mount, throttle bracket, etc.. Not a bolt on mustang kit. Same goes for any other mustang S/C - not a bolt onto a V8 explorer.

Anyone ever put a Supercharged Thunderbird engine in an Explorer? I was toying with the idea but I don't know if it would work.

Todd, If you play your cards right you can get it done within a few thousand dollars. 1-2k. You need a cheap donor vehicle though, heck section even made money off his swap!

True, if you can find a cheap donor, you could do really cheap. A big expense on mine was the $2500 rolling chassis I bought. It was one of the chassis at the assembly plant in 1997 when it go flooded. The brakes were rust and alot of silt on the frame, but the engine and powertrain were all good - no water/silt inside. So, for $2500 I had brand new, never run, parts. Then I bought everything else i needed new, like rad, etc.. So that is how I got close to $4K.
