Hi guys i have a '98 sport with sohc engine and i just installed a superchip. it works good except for sometimes when i give it alot of gas it bogs for a second then goes. what could be the problem?
What octane are you using right now? The Superchip is designed for 93 oct or higher, using a lower octane may cause the problems you're seeing or even worse.
i have a 98 4.0 SOHC and i just installed my superchip last week, and i havent had any problems like that; but then again, i havent really tested it out yet (i havent really gotten on it yet, or anything like that.) maybe contact superchips and see what they have to say.
I would definetly try using 93 octane, your engine WILL NOT run good with lower octane with a Superchip brand chip. Using lower octane will/can cause pinging. Also make sure you chip is in tightly. I had to put some cardboard between my Superchip and the computer casing, then secured it with good 'ole duct tape!
I have the same problem with my 98 sport sohc. When i am rolling about 5mph, and i floor it, the engine cuts for a second, then takes off. Really strange, and i have tried multiple types of gasoline too.....
Did you reset your computer? Also it takes a little bit for your computer to get used to the chip. I noticed when I installed it on my '99 it was a little funky at first, but then after about 100 miles everything is nice and smooth. Also I have used nothign but 93 octane and havent had a problem. I have had mine in for aobut 3/4 of a year. Has anyone else noticed a sort of hissing coming from what seems like the dash when you hit the gas after installing the superchip? I noticed that. It almost sounds like a leak, but I cant find anything, and it hasnt hurt anything. it gets stronger as your rpms go up. Just wondering
yes jornum1, I had the same effect of a hissing sound after installing the superchip. When I first intalled the chip the computer was not fully seated to the firewall. Just yesterday I pulled out the computer so see if my superchip was still secured properly. When i re-installed the computer, I filled in the gap with insullation. Now I do not have that hissing sound. So i assume that the hissing sound is just the engine noise filtering through to the passanger compartment. Maybe, Maybe not?
The reason it bogs a bit is because of it running too lean(if I remember correctly, it's been a while). When you hit the gas it sucks in air, but not enough gas so it sort of hesitates. I would do what they said about resetting the ECU and taking it easy for about 100 miles. Let the ECU learn the new settings.
I did reset the computer..... But i dont always use the 92.... i will go with that from now on and see if it helps.
The hissing noise i have had for a long time now.... even before the chip install. Sounds like a vacuum leak in the dash somewhere. My bet is that it is the brake booster, as that would explain my poor braking and ****ty gas mileage (14-16mpg)
I too had some problems with a Superchip and my 99 Limited. Worked perfectly for 6 months....Started stalling at lights for no reason...Removed chip and it stopped stalling. Called Superchips and they said it was a "seating problem". This time I installed it firmly but not tight like I did before. Now its WORSE!!! I tried to start it at McDonalds and it refuse to run for more than 20 seconds. Reinstalled it again and the engine would die while driving down the road.
OK.....Those were the problems!!! Im pissed at this point....Superchips says its still a seating problem.
I pulled the computer board out of its case and inspected the connector runs where the chip connects. On the bottom side I noticed tiny grooves on the runs where the chip was making GOOD contact. On the top side I couldnt see any scratches on the runs. (Hmmmm....could this be my problem????)
I deceided to "beef" up the runs on the top side by adding some solder to the runs to allow the chip to have something to bite onto. Now the top has scratches on the runs.
So far I have not had any more problems. (only 200 miles so far).
Just an Idea for those who might be having some problems. WOrked for me.
