I've serched the forums and suspect I need to clean the MAF however as I have NO mechanical experience I wanted to check with you guys first.

Basically, starting first thing in the morning is always first turn of the key, idle goes up to around 2.5k and drops to 6k ish, idle alternates between within this range till the engine has warmed.

I don't know if it has anything to do with it but also when cold I need to drive at least 3 miles before I get what I would regard as normal throttle response, it just feels like the car hasn't woken up yet. is this normal for the Ex, if so I'll live with it but if it's a symptom of a problem I'd like to sort it out.

cheers.

Graham.

Not sure mate, mine on first start does rev high at about 1500, then after a little bit goes to normal idle 600 and stays there even- no hunting or bad behavior.
Start at the front with the air cleaner, check its still good, then I would also have a look at the platic housing and see that it is all seated right, follow it up passed the maf and then I would look at the tps sensor , ( have you done the tps mod?)
On my old ex, I did that and it did make a differance to the start revs and the general running- I have not done it as yet on this one as I cannot find my digital meter!
sure I lent it out to someone!!!!!!

Let me know how you get on- cleaning the maf is not a bad thing to do, just be sure to be gentle with the wires inside.....I used carb cleaner and a few cotton buds on mine- worked a treat.

same problem here always worse when really cold, guess is the inlet manifold leaking as bluka says, waiting for it to warm up a bit (weather) before I tackle it but maf is easy to clean,
mine even stalls when really cold but reliable other than 1st start up so sounds like a smaller leak than mine and mines still ok +engine light is on ! search for oom12 on the forum and you will see whats invoved.
hmv whats the tps mod m8?

Typical, O'well, I had hoped to avoid that for awhile but I suppose once it's done I don't need to worry about it for a while.

I seem to remember reading that it's not "too" difficult to fit, I'm fine with computers but a total novice as far as car mechs are concerned.

Can I just ask the dealer for the Explorer's oom12 kit or would that asking too much from them :-)

Cheers Howard,

I'll go see if I have any luck with the dealer, in case I don't whats the best way of getting the kit??

Those instructions look clear enough, hopefully not have any probs fitting it :-)

Thanks guys!!

oom12 sorted it great although my mechanic only did the gaskets as the washer that came in the kit was fairly bent and he wasn't sure if that would cause a problem.

Kept the rest of the parts so if I get the rattling chains I'll have to get it all apart again but at least it's good at the moment :-)

The washer is supposed to be bent as in a spring washer, Anyway glad the 'o' rings worked out for you.
