I have a '91 Explorer, and yesterday I pulled into my driveway and put it in park. Immediately, the RPM's shot up to 2000, so I put it in Drive and they went back down to normal idle. Put it in park and shot back up to 2000. I thought maybe the throttle was stuck, so I just shut it off. I tried to start it right away, and I got nothing but a loud clicking. I noticed days before that, that my alternator was acting up, so I assumed it had finally gone out. I then proceeded to jump start the Exploder, but when I turned the key, it sounded like something was shorting out, and there was a obvious electrical burning smell.

Now, I realize that the surging RPM's probably results from a vacuum problem (IAC, leak, etc.), but how would that possibly relate to an electrical problem. I checked all fuses and relays, removed battery cable to reset computer, smacked my starter around, bypassed starter solenoid, and still nothing. The engine will not crank. I get the clicking sound then the sound of my fuel pump.

If anyone could please help me or has any advice other than the useless ideas I had, please do so.

Welcome to the site! Sounds like you have two seperate problems there.
Idle problem sounds like IAC...not sure on the electrical burning smell. Could be the alt itself.
