drive a 98 2WD XLT. when i make a turn, hit a bump, or whatever...the car throws me around bad. if i hit a bump at an angle, the car bounces side to side a few times. it makes for a very rough ride and isnt very fun. is this springs wearing out or shocks? and if im on the wrong forum sorry...just joined and this is all very confusing to me. any help you can give would be great

If you have the original shocks on it, they're likely shot (and have been for quite some time).

Could also be a bad end link on the anti-sway bar(s) allowing excessive motion as well. Both are common problems with simple solutions.

so best bet is probably to replace the shocks, and check out the sway bars?
for the shocks, can i just unbolt them, pull one out and check it before i replace? or is it more complicated than that?

yes and yes, and no its not more complicated than that.

If they're the originals, it's not even worth checking the shocks. With that kind of mileage, I will guarantee they're worn out. Unless the vehicle was run on nothing but AZ flat roads, they're shot.

The end links are a simple visual inspection. If they're not broke, they don't need fixin'. :)

shocks

yeah im pretty sure ill be investing in new shocks. any suggestions? i know bilstein and edelbrock are good, but also expensive...what about monroe? any info could help, thanks

Monroe Reflex shocks are a great on/off road shock and the Sensa Tracs are great for on-road only. $40 apiece for Reflex, $30 apiece for SensaTrac.

This reminds me... I've got a brand new set of Monroe SensaTracs sitting on the shelf. They're off my 98 4x4 sport, but they will fit a 2wd. The only difference is in the lower portion of the body, but I spoke with Joe out at Tenneco Automotive (they make the Monroe and Rancho shocks) and he assured me that the dimensions and function are identical between the 2wd and 4wd shocks, the only difference being in the lower half of the shock body. (It's for clearance around the front halfshafts on the 4x4s) They are valved the same and perform identically, however.

$100 shipped if you (or anyone else for that matter)are interested.

will these work on a LIFTED VEHICLE?

BODY lifted? Yes. Suspension-lifted? No.

damn that sucks

All you've done to lift your truck is the BL and the TT - those shocks should work fine.

i max out my stock shocks with the way im set up
