Hi everybody
New here, just found this forum yesterday, 1-11-12, and I figured someone here would have some advise for me and my problem. First, I live here in the thumb, in Mayville Michigan.
I have a 2010 Sporttrac, four wheel drive, v-6 engine. I already have 85,000 miles on it, almost all highway miles, I drive 60 miles one way to work six to seven times a week. The other day the trans started acting up. I drove it home as usual, and it was working just fine with no problems at all. My wife got in it the next morning because she was going to take my vehicle that day, and she called me and told me the truck was not shifting right, and brought it back to get her car. I got in it and what it does is that it doesn't shift into overdrive, and it doesn't shift gears until it hits about 4500 rpm. The overdrive light is not blinking, and when I hit the overdrive button, it will sometimes come on, and sometimes it wont. When it does come on or doesn't, the engine rpm doesn't change, so I know it isn't going in or out of overdrive. When I let off the gas, the engine rpm will drop down almost to idle rpm, telling me that the torque converter isn't locked up, again, no overdrive. On the dash the check engine light is on, and the little wrench light is on. The wrench light doesn't stay on all the time, some time it will go out when I feather the gas to make it shift quicker than 4500 rpm.
I took it to the dealer that I bought it from, and two days later they called me and said,,,, it has internal problems, there is metal shavings in the pan, it needs a complete rebuild or reman replacement... $3300.00 to $3400.00 bucks. Now, I'm no dummy, and know a bit about cars, (mainly the older ones,, I'm only 60 years young) I know that some metal shavings in the pan of an auto trans is normal, that's why the magnet in the pan. I'm thinking they are trying to rip me off. I don't beat on my car, I drive like an old man, mainly because I am old, and I'm in no hurry to go anywhere. As I mentioned, most of those miles are highway miles, I don't pull anything heavier than a small utility trailer to go to home depot or the like to pick up material for home projects. The fact that the car drove perfectly fine when I parked it, and immediately drove bad when it was started the next day, tells me that it most likely isn't a burnt up trans, but probably something electrical or a sensor of some sort. I didn't get any extended warranty with it.
What I am hoping to find out from someone out here is a couple of things. Am I right in thinking that this tranny isn't burnt up, and need to get another opinion of its condition???
Does anyone have an idea of what my problem may be, and if so, would it be an easy fix that I can do, or should I take in to a shop and have it diagnosed and fixed???
If I need to get another opinion, the big question,,, any reputable shops here in my area??? As I mentioned, I'm here in the thumb of Mich, about 20 miles north of Lapeer. I'm going to pick the truck up from the dealer today, and I don't mind driving 50 or 60 miles to a reputable shop as long as I'm not doing any more damage if it is a serious problem.
Any information as to what my problem is, what my next move should be, and most important, a trustworthy shop around this area would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long winded explanation.
Thanks, Dave
