Hi everybody
New here, just found this forum yesterday, 1-11-12, and I figured someone here would have some advise for me and my problem. First, I live here in the thumb, in Mayville Michigan.
I have a 2010 Sporttrac, four wheel drive, v-6 engine. I already have 85,000 miles on it, almost all highway miles, I drive 60 miles one way to work six to seven times a week. The other day the trans started acting up. I drove it home as usual, and it was working just fine with no problems at all. My wife got in it the next morning because she was going to take my vehicle that day, and she called me and told me the truck was not shifting right, and brought it back to get her car. I got in it and what it does is that it doesn't shift into overdrive, and it doesn't shift gears until it hits about 4500 rpm. The overdrive light is not blinking, and when I hit the overdrive button, it will sometimes come on, and sometimes it wont. When it does come on or doesn't, the engine rpm doesn't change, so I know it isn't going in or out of overdrive. When I let off the gas, the engine rpm will drop down almost to idle rpm, telling me that the torque converter isn't locked up, again, no overdrive. On the dash the check engine light is on, and the little wrench light is on. The wrench light doesn't stay on all the time, some time it will go out when I feather the gas to make it shift quicker than 4500 rpm.
I took it to the dealer that I bought it from, and two days later they called me and said,,,, it has internal problems, there is metal shavings in the pan, it needs a complete rebuild or reman replacement... $3300.00 to $3400.00 bucks. Now, I'm no dummy, and know a bit about cars, (mainly the older ones,, I'm only 60 years young) I know that some metal shavings in the pan of an auto trans is normal, that's why the magnet in the pan. I'm thinking they are trying to rip me off. I don't beat on my car, I drive like an old man, mainly because I am old, and I'm in no hurry to go anywhere. As I mentioned, most of those miles are highway miles, I don't pull anything heavier than a small utility trailer to go to home depot or the like to pick up material for home projects. The fact that the car drove perfectly fine when I parked it, and immediately drove bad when it was started the next day, tells me that it most likely isn't a burnt up trans, but probably something electrical or a sensor of some sort. I didn't get any extended warranty with it.
What I am hoping to find out from someone out here is a couple of things. Am I right in thinking that this tranny isn't burnt up, and need to get another opinion of its condition???
Does anyone have an idea of what my problem may be, and if so, would it be an easy fix that I can do, or should I take in to a shop and have it diagnosed and fixed???
If I need to get another opinion, the big question,,, any reputable shops here in my area??? As I mentioned, I'm here in the thumb of Mich, about 20 miles north of Lapeer. I'm going to pick the truck up from the dealer today, and I don't mind driving 50 or 60 miles to a reputable shop as long as I'm not doing any more damage if it is a serious problem.
Any information as to what my problem is, what my next move should be, and most important, a trustworthy shop around this area would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long winded explanation.

Thanks, Dave

I'm not up on transmissions but I tend to agree with you. It doesn't go bad overnight. (does the OD light flash?) If it's not shifting then it should throw a code. Get it read and go from there. May only be the solenoid pack in the transmission. Could be an engine sensor or communication between the engine and pcm/trans. I'd get another opinion for sure.

The exact same thing happened to my dads 2003 Explorer. had to rev to 4000 rpm to shift and no OD. that happened for 2 days straight then on the 3rd day the damn thing worked perfectly fine, you would never of known that there was ever an issue. Now we did rebuild it and knew that since it started shifting perfect again its def. something electrical or something weird going on in the solenoid block.

Cause just like you he parked it and it was shifting perfect and then the next morning that all happened. Mechanical failures usually have warning signs of thing about to go sour but a mechanical failure over night is far fetched.

Were you able to get the dealership to give you the codes thrown? Most likely its a solenoid block issue.

The not shifting in and out of OD is a concern. That said, not all dealers are honest. Get a second opinion.
Meantime....
Disconnect the battery for about 15 minutes, then drive it and see if it is any different. Sometimes the computer can experience a brain fart and resetting it will fix it.

Hey guys
Thanks for the replys. I did pick the truck up, and they did have the codes that it threw... P0730, P0733, P0735, and P0775. I haven't been able to find the codes yet, but I think that the first three codes pertain to correct or incorrect gear ratio, and I think the last code has something to do with shift solenoid. The O.D. light is not blinking. I'm not real sure on those codes, because so far I have only found a generic code list, which didn't have the last code listed. I'm hopeing that it is just a solenoid or something minor like that, and I hope that it is something I can replace. Would somebody be able to verify what those codes mean. If I can fix this thing myself, I am really going to raise a stink about that dealership with the state, the BBB, facebook, and if nobody would be offended, I will post it here so nobody else gets burned by them.
If this is something like a solenoid replacement, would I get the parts from a dealer, trans shop, auto parts, ebay or ???? Again I thank you guys for any help that you give me.
Dave

This is a 5-speed automatic and not a 6 speed, correct?

Doesn't list a P0730

These are all shift solenoid codes which should be eliminated before assuming internal mechanical damage. AND they are all "electrical" so there could be the issue. Battery/charging system in good condition? No slow cranking?

P0733** SSA, SSB, SSC or internal parts 3rd gear ratio error 3rd gear not commanded. Correct gear ratio not achieved for commanded gear. Shift errors may also be due to other transmission concerns (stuck valves, damaged friction material). Engine rpm could be higher or lower than expected

P0735 SSA, SSB, SSC, Shift Solenoid D (SSD) or internal parts 5th gear ratio error 5th gear not commanded. Correct gear ratio not achieved for commanded gear. Shift errors may also be due to other transmission concerns (stuck valves, damaged friction material). Engine rpm could be higher or lower than expected.

P0775 Pressure Control Solenoid B (PCB)

Hi Steve
Yes, it is a 4 speed w/overdrive. I made a mistake on that first code,, it wasn't P0730, it was P073. As I was driving home from work this evening, it did seem to go into overdrive a couple of times, when the car was cold. It appeared so by the tach RPM, but as soon as I gave it a bit of gas, it downshifted out of O/D. Also when one of the times I thought it was in O/D, I pushed the O/D button, and the tach did jump up. It doesn't seem to have any engine braking in any gear. I didn't try to take off in any gear but drive, I will try taking off in 1st and 2nd tomorrow. Hope this narrows things a bit.
Thanks Dave
