Switch to full syn fluids on new to me '04 EX ?

Just put my '97 F-150 out to pasture after 255K on the clock and picked up a one owner (lease returned actually) '04 Explorer XLT w/ 65k miles. As I like to take care of and drive my vehicles for a long time, I'd like to switch this Explorer over to full synthetic fluids, one area at a time over the next 6 months starting with the crankcase.

I like what I read at Amsoil's site and am leaning hard towards their oil and filter, but would listen to other opinions too. Also, how do you feel about extending the oil change out to 10-15,000 miles ? I can install one of those oilpan drain valve gizmos to make it easy to send in oil samples for quality verification, unless there is a better sampling technique recommended.

I switched to Amsoil SSO 0-30W and filter and only change the oil once a year (I do about 7-8k miles a year). Very happy with it so far and heartily recommend it.

This is a VERY common topic (gets asked several times a week I find). Hit the SEARCH tool and scour the archives for all the pros/cons of making the switch. I personally don't agree with many of the cons against using synth and many of them are just myths/urban legends. You'll find this is a black vs white debate. People tend to have pre-formed opinions on the subject so rather than starting another one, read up on what's already been said.

I am also in the same boat however not sure about the oil, should i stay with the 5w30?
