Switching alternators

I was considering adding a made to fit 160 amp or + alternator to a 1992 Explorer. How difficult is it to switch alternators, and anyone with experience in doing this how long did it take you?

1) Take off the belt

2) Unbolt old alternator (+) wire and undo connector

3) Unbolt old alternator, remove

4) Bolt on new alternator

5) Hook up the wires, same as the old

6) Reinstall belt


Thats it!

I don't know if you've got a source for the high amp alternator, but Dead Link Removed makes high amp alternators- they cost $$$.

I read you should upgrade the main wiring when you install a high amp alt also.

Hot to the battery, ground...like that.

Gotta love those instructions though...straight to the point! Accurate as hell too!

my dad and i put my 130 amp in my 92 in probably under 30 mins and that includes tool clean up and everything

When my car is ideling, the alternator gauge goes back and forth a little, and you can here it in the engine and the lights dim. I do have a stero system, but even when its not on i have the same prob. Could it be the time for a new alternator or somthing elese.

I read in another post Mr. Alternator sells 200 amp alternators at a reasonable price 1/2 what PowerMater sells them for.

Bought one had them Power Coat it in Red they had it at my door 2nd day...that's service!

They don't put out full output at idle, but it's running my 2 Xtant amps and everything else NO PROBLEM!

cdsl, I did the same exact thing that you did, same color and everything! The first one that he sent me though was the wrong alternator, so he sent me the new one with a return slip for the wrong one, and said if I ever needed anything from him he would give me a discount on whatever I bought to make up for the inconvenience! Real great guy to buy from!

Without a doubt, quick, courteous and got it to me in no time!

I was about to buy the PowerMaster alternator, but at half the price this was like ka-ching $$$. Especially since I'm putting all the loot out for an SAS next month.

I asked about rewiring to the battery and he told me the existing wire was 8 gauge and recommended I go to 4 gauge if I did any competition stuff.

But hell as soon as I figure out how to dump the air box I'm putting in a yellow top battery with an isolator to run the amps, fogs and winch.

Then I'll rewire to 4 gauge.

Defintely cool people to buy from. I love it when you get the straight deal from someone who's taking your money!

Ya my alternator just came and it fit in perfectly, there was no slack in the belt at all, even with the smaller pulley. I'll be rewiring my battery cables too but i'm using 1/0 gauge to do so from knukonceptz.com.
