Synthetic Transmission Fluid

I've got a 1998 Eddie Bauer V6 with about 160,000 miles on it. I bought it at 125,000 miles from a friend who took excellent care of it. I do a lot of highway driving and am thinking of swithing to synthic transmission fluid as well as synthetic gear oil in the differential. I had a Ford mechanic tell me recently that he would change to synthetic gear oil for the differential but not for the transmission due to the high miles on the vehicle. Any risk in swithching over to synthetic transmission fluid given the high miles?

If it were mine, I would make the swap.

I have used both Mobil 1 and Amsoil with excellent results.
