Synthetic Transmission Fluid?

I have a 1998 Eddie Bauer V6 with the 4.0L SOHC V6 that has about 160,000 miles on it. I bought it at 125,000 from a friend who took excellent care of it. I do alot of highway driving and it is time for a transmission service, so I'm thinking of changing to synthetic trans fluid as well as synthetic gear oil in the differential. Recently, I talked to a Ford mechanic who said he would recomend the synthetic gear oil but not switching to syntehic in the trans due to the high miles. Any risk in switching to synthetic trans fluid with so many miles on the vehicle?

I wouldn't worry about synthetic fluid damaging anything. Your transmission uses Mercon V semi-synthetic.

You should be ok with the synthetic.
