I am thinking of changing out my mazda 5-spd for something that can handle more aggressive driving. I was wondering if you guys could give me some pointers.Whats the cheapest place to order a BW T-5, or can I use one out of a Mustang? Is there a specific model of mustang that I should look for that has the T-5?Are there any places that make a conversion kit to make this any easier for the above average shade-tree mechanic?Any help or comment is appreciated.

questions lead to questions

hey scott, what model, year, engine, 2 or 4wd , etc. do you have? does it have to be a manual tranny? if it is a 2wd it will be a lot easier to find your tranny cause you won't have to worry about tailshaft splines. so more info and we may have more answers.

Sorry about that. i have a '91 4.0, 4wd, and currently using a mazda 5-spd.(the originally equipped one)i just had it totally rebuilt($2500). I don't think i want to have that done again, so I was pondering the idea of putting in a tranny (5spd or auto, which ever is easier)that could handle the agressive driving.I have some small mods to the engine, but I don't want to take it any further if the tranny is just going to crumble again.thanks for any replies.

I believe you need a T5 from a '83-'93 Mustang, with the slave cylinder from a '93 Corvette. You will need several adapting bell housing parts. Look on the board, there is a link to the website that sells these parts for the Ranger with the 4.0 engine, hence they are good for Explorers with the 4.0. Tranny runs about $800 (used or rebuilt) adapting parts about $450 and slave is about $80. Labor would probably be between $300 - $500.

I want to do this too, but I might just wait for my tranny to kick it.

is the t-5 the same as the 5.0 explorer tranny? did they beef it up any before putting it in the explorer opposed to the mustang? How hard would it be to convert a 4.0 auto to the t-5 manual?

Hey Campbell, I don't think that the V-8 explorers came with a 5spd manual, they have a 5spd auto. The t-5 was used in 3.8L(I think) and 5.0L mustangs. About converting it from an auto to a manual. I think you would need the computer from an explorer that had a manual tranny, I don't know about the wiring that gpes to the trannies.
I would really love to do this, since the tranny is much beefier (although a lot of mustangers don't like the t-5) than the stock mazda 5spd.

T-5 Conversion

I have the t-5 in my Explorer and it's been great so far and I'll never have to have that Mazda junk again. Advance Adaptors sell them with all the adaptors you need. Do a search on this site for threads I,ve written in the past listing all the things you'll need and what other mods you might need.

Hope this helps,

Brian
