Of course this thread is going strong for other people and I see many suggestions: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=149063

But I think I can narrow it down with your help with these symptoms:

  • T/c first locked on after jumping a curb and parking (shook and stalled)
  • would stall 80% of stops for that night and the day after
  • took the Ex offroad, bounced it around, now it has been fine for all stopping today
  • T/c would always unlock if downshifted (2/1) before I think the computer tried to unlock itself (during autodownshift to 2nd?)
  • T/c would still lock on and stall if shifted into 1/2 after the computer tried to unlock (during autodownshift to 2nd?). If shifted into N after this shiftpoint (ie, too late) the t/c would stay locked even if shifted back into D, truck needed to be restarted to unlock.

So, any ideas where to start simply enough? Thanks guys, these trucks are great off road! ;)

Have you removed the solenoid, cleaned it, and click tested it with a 12 volt power source, and some WD-40 spray? The valve body has to be removed in order to remove the solenoid. There is a TCC filter in the valve body which looks like a sock, and a spring in the upper part of the case. Clean or replace anything which would cause the solenoid to get clogged again.
