OK, I've been reading other forums for a long time, ranger and explorer forums, and almost every forum has a member with this trouble, but no one can solve it...

Here we go, I have a 99 sport, I'm not pretty sure about what transfer case I have, but the thing is that it wont engage 4low or 4hi at the front axle, even that my front axle is spinning...

I know someone here talked about a electromagnetic clucth and a brown wire, the brown wire is sending 12 volt when 4low or 4hi is in, but the fawking clucht will not engage, I think maybe it's the clucht but I'm not pretty sure...
The other pins at the plug aren't sending anything, is this right or wrong?? it supossed to send something?? or just shown continuity?? I found a diagram of a first gen X shift motor plug, but I don't want to shortout my GEM... I really want to be sure of what I'll be testing...

If the front shaft is spinning I think the hubs are discardted.....

A friend offer me to change the t-case out of a totalled X, but I don't want to paid some $$$ on a "new" T-case and then find out it was the GEM or a seal or anything else...

Oh, I forgot about two months ago the T-case leaked some fluid from the front output shaft, but it stops itself... I want to change the seal, but I think I will have to rip out the hole T-case to take out the joint...

I know someone have this trouble, please I really need to know what it is!!

Bump!!!

Here is a thread where they are talking about disabling the transfer case clutch:Dead Link Removed

I know that isn't what you need, but some of the information will be valueable for you to troubleshoot your problem, especially the last two pages of the thread.

The brown wire going into the transfer case supplies the current for the electromagnetic coil which engages the clutch. It uses a PWM (pulse width modulated) signal to vary the amount of time that the clutch engages. If you confirm that the signal is being sent along the brown wire, but your front wheels don't turn when all wheels are in the air, then it sounds like either the coil or the clutch are no longer working.

The other wires in the connector near the transfer case are for:

1) the driveshaft speed sensors (2) which send a signal to the GEM when the driveshafts are turning

2) the shift motor plate sensors (4) which send a signal to the GEM to indicate the position of the shift motor

3) power for the shift motor which is only on when engaging or disengaging 4wd Lo

So, it is normal not to see voltage at the other wires.

I think on the 97 and newer Explorers with Control Trac you must take apart the case to replace the front seal.
