so the t case in my 97 is on it way out it a 4405 and I was looking to put a better one in is the 1354 a good t case I kown explorer came with 1354s and so did the rangers. like to a manual if I find one and if wiil work dont care about shift on the fly. so give me some ideas if it will work or not.

1354 manual will work just fine.

Just make sure to get one that has the VSS gear in it for your 97. Grab the U-joint style front drive shaft that goes to it, as the 1354 with a cup style front output has no VSS. Hardest part to find is the linkage and shifter for it.

well cant I get the shifter out of the donor and as for the vss gear I dont know what that is.

If you have a donor available, then heck yeah.

VSS is a Variable Speed Sensor. 97 down uses a gear driven sensor in the t-case, this is what you have. You need to swap the old plastic gear from yours to the 1354 sensor to get a correct reading on your speedo.

98+ uses the electrical sensor in the rear differential that reads the rotations of the tone ring attached to the ring gear. It is also a duel sensor for the ABS.
