Do you have any kind of bedliner covering it? There should be a maybe 4"X30" panel on the inside of thye gate, held on by Torx head screws.

Same Tailgate mystery

hello beachguy, did you get into the tailgate yet?
I just aquired a 91 Ranger with the same no apparent acess panel to replace the broken cable inside. :(

never got into the tailgate.... i dont know what else to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated

So do you have a bedliner of any kind?

Can you post a pic of this, I can't imagine there's not a way in.

I will post pic tomorrow, my son is using truck now, how do i post pics?

Since you're not Elite, you'll have to link them from another site.

Getting into the tailgate

Well it's not toooo difficult, but is unususal and if the truck has some age (don't we all) the torx bolts are balky.
First remove the OUTSIDE decorative panel by removing the 10 torx bolts distributed across the INSIDE and the 4 phillips sheet metal screws (2) on each end of the the outside. Then the 3 larger torx bolts on the inside releases the handle, to drop down. if you need to get to the latch end, the 11mm hex bolts on each end obviously get to them.
I haven't actually finished this dissacembly because the 3 large torx bolts are frozen and my torx wrench has a little too much play. I'm soaking them in wd40 and I will update this when I get it all apart. Just wanted to share what I've found so far.
Hope this helps you. :)

Nice, an answer! Thanks for following up.
