I bought my 2000 Mounty back in July with 58,300 miles on it. It now has 62,100 miles on it and I can't seem to pinpoint a tapping noise that it makes. It is nonexistant at idle, and as the rpms increase, the sound speeds up and gets louder. It seems that the longer I stay in the throttle, the louder the tapping becomes. It is definitely coming from the driver's side of the engine.
I searched around regarding an passenger side exhaust manifold leak but wouldn't the sound coming from the driver's side rule that out?
What about an EGR leak? I have no idea what to look for if it were an EGR problem, I've never had a vehicle before that had EGR, so this is a first for me.
