92 X 177k, clicking/tapping noise from engine

well this just started today or yesterday. there is a clicking or fast tapping noise from under the hood. and it only seems to happen when i push on the gas pedal. it doesn't do it at idle or startup. could anyone venture an educated guess?

doesn't do it if i rev at idle either (with clutch in) only when pressing gas in motion

Is it only in a certain RPM range? Have you ever heard pinging before? That's kinda what i'm thinking it is.

well thus far it seems to be at any rpm range. but it doesn't do it at idle or if you rev the engine. just during forward motion

The early style 4.0's had terrible trouble with the rocker arms wearing out wiht high miles but that would be noisy at all times. Your problem sounds more like an exhaust leak. I recommend taking it to a exhaust shop and seeing if they listen to it and see, they shouldn't charge anything just to listen. Now if they try to find it then they may charge you a fee but I've seen some I'd pay to have found.
