Seems like it never ends....
A couple months ago, I had a problem with my Explorer when turning into a parking lot. Made the turn and stopped but when I went to go again, the engine revved and nothing - like I was in neutral. Then something cought and there was a loud grinding noise (like when you miss a shift in a stick) and then I was back in gear. Took it to the trans shop who rebuikt the trans over the winter and they had it for 2 days, drove it and tested it and could find nothing wrong with it or the transfer case....
Now, today coming home it did the same thing while driving down the road. Was coasting and itwent into neutral and the RPM's were all over the place - 3-4k RPM. Than a bang and I was back in gear....
Any clue - I'm thinking it's the transfer case - the truck has 72k on it and I don't want to sink lots of $$ into it (plan to trade soon), but also don't want to get stuck. I'm probably going to change the xfer case fluid this weekend, but is there anything to look for? Magnet like the trans? Fluid smell bad?
Thanks in advance!
