OK so we believe mytcase is shot... makes alot of clicking and its not from anywhere else in the drivetrain. We are swapping in another one and want to know what other years have the same tcase as me or a better one that bolts up with NO modifications. I have a 98 sport with 4wheel drive. There are alot of explorers at the local yard and I also believe that there are mazda pickups with the same platform as my explorer. We want to get the tcase from this mazda pickup because the rest of the vehicle looks in good shape for a junk yard truck.

I'm not 100% sure but I think you can use any transfer case from the 95+ Explorer with the 4.0L engine. The rotary switch on your dash is labelled differently I believe, but this difference is just in the electronic controls and I think the actual transfer case is the same.

But just to make sure, transfer cases typically come with a sticker on the side. In the image below, ignore the stubby silver thing on the left, but you can see the sticker on the transfer case on the right (reads 5BA)

If you can find a transfer case with the exact same letters, that is an exact match.

we def did not see a label when we pulled mine out. Im gonna have to clean it up a lil and try to get some stamped numbered off it to match up at the yard. Do I have to worry about different spline counts if the tranmission is different?

All the spline counts on the transfer cases that came behind both 4.0L engines (the OHV and the SOHC) are all the same.

Awesome thanks for the help we pulled a good one from a 4dr sohc 98 explorer with the same tcase numbers. The ranger pickup types all have the smaller tcase,
