Other than a dealer or junkyard does anyone know where I can pick up the controls for the HVAC / blower? When we turn it to the 3rd setting, the fan speed doesn't change until you go just a little bit further then it changes. As soon as you let go of the knob it goes back to the second setting. I think it's just worn and I believe all three knobs are 1 part. Dealer usually = big $$$$ and junkyard is just taking a chance that, if I can find the right part, what I get doesn't turn into the same problem or worse and ends up being a waste of time and $$. I'll do what I have to, but options are always nice.

i see what you are saying about "one big part". but you dont need to get all of that. I am sure yours is the same as mine (2004)

on my 04 the fan speed only worked on #4(high) . it was a 20$(no more then 30$) part at the ford dealership.

Basically pulled the knobs off, removed the radio bezel(carefully pry it off with a screwdriver/ pull it off). . a few 7mm(or 8mm i forget) bolts holding the hole climate control assembly in , pulled it out a little and unpluged the switch deal and put in the new one. put it back together.

i dont know the technical name of the part, but i am sure if you tell the parts guy you want " the part that controls the 1,2,3,4 fan speed behind the knob" , he would figure it out/ pull up a drawing. maybe it is called the blower motor knob dial switch? I threw away the box that had the part # too, damn.

i thought it was the blower motor resistor at first, but i figure i try this. worked. . I have all my fan speeds back :)
good luck

keep me updated

I would check out the blower resister first. A little tough to get to the first time, but an easy an inexpensive replacement. If small leaves or other get on the resisters (springs), which are exposed to incoming rubbish, various speeds controlled by the blower resister will fail. I replaced it three times on early model Explorers.:)

I know it's not the resistor, at least from reading posts regarding it. From what I've read typically you would loose 1 or 2 fan speeds. I haven't completely lost the third position. I can get it to a point where it engages then wedge a peice of paper or something in there and it will continue to work.....unless the paper falls out ;). I'll have to price the module through the dealer and see what they are going to hit me for. Replacing it I know will be easy enough.

i know you might want to skip them but try the junkyards in metro detroit, been a few '02-05's couple per yard, and about $25 for the part, when i have gone looking for parts for mine. Usually they let you test it out before you buy, if your truck is handy.
