Well I had a prob with the xploder. The tensioner pully grenaded when the wife was driving it and she over heated it. The water pump and idler pully where also bad so I replaced them as well as the radiator and the cap. Radiator was leaking so i thought it was a good time. Well after doing all this the temp now fluctuates big time and the upper rad hose sucks flat when the stat either is opening or closing not sure which. Maybe just air in the system ? I am lost.

The air has to be purged out of the system. It took a while on mine and my method wasn't all that good but search some of the other threads here. You'll find the answer.

Remove radiator cap

One thing to try is to remove the radiator cap, start the engine and let it run until the thermostat opens. The cap being removed allows the air to escape from the block and water from the radiator to replace the air. You'll see the water level drop each time the engine "burps".

Ok did the funnel thing and when I shut it off there is a thumping sound from the coolant system. This is without the engine running. Maybe I should drive around without the cap on for a day?

Park the veh. on an uphill slant with the front higher than the rear. Revove rad. cap and turn on the heater and let it idle untill there are no more bubbles/burps. Keep adding coolant when it burps.

Just a little update It appears as though the new cap was not allowing water back into the radiator from the overflow. This of course causes the hoses to collapse and does not allow flow from rad to engine unless it gets hot enough to cause pressure. Took awhile but I found it thanks. And check your overflow it will really mess with you.

Never mind its back. Even after puling the stat and doing a full flush then letting it burp for 40 min its still doing it. And thumping. I am starting to think cracked head or block from overheat.

no.. its probably not a cracked head or block.. On this year explorer and and the 95, there are issues with this, especially when the water pump is replaced with an aftermarket one. I had the same issue and replaced everything in the coolant system. I got frustrated with it and took it to the dealer. After they were confussed for 3 days, they concluded the water pump was cavitating and there are service bulletins about it. The solution is either a coolant by-pass kit or a special water pump from ford which is what I did.

Here is a link to another thread dealing with this:

ahodges I think u where right on. They should make a sticky somewhere about this. I was ready to part ways with it. I think its fixed no thumping but still a little fluctuation in the gauge. Rather than buy a 259 dollar water pump and finding out there is only 1 bypass kit left in the country i Fabbed my own bypass. I will let u know if it works out thanks.
