Hi guys, I'm new to the board and have a quick question. I have a 2001 Explorer Sport 4X4 with 42,000 miles.

I'm having a problem were the temp gauge goes up to the red line and then the check gauges light come on. After the light comes on the gauge starts going up and down and the light will go on and off. The engine does not seem to be getting hot and the truck seems to sound and run normally. I think its the temp sending unit but I'm not sure.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Orange, there's two ways you can go about this. One is to read the DTC's. If you get a P0217 (Engine Overtemperature Condition), you still don't know the underlying cause.

It's either the temp sender or a faulty thermostat. Since it's so easy and inexpensive, I'd change the thermostat first, and see if that solves the problem.

I'm not sure which engine you have (did the sport come with a v8?) but the temp sending units are very easy to change. Even easier than the thermostat.

You should have either one of these sensors.

They only cost about $3 ~ $4 and can be changed in less than 5 minutes without even breaking the cooling system or any mess.

Thanks

Thanks everyone. I'm going to replace the Temp sending unit first and see if that's the problem. I'm pretty sure it's not the T-stat but I might replace it anyway since its so easy to replace.

Also, It's a 4.0 SOHC.

Problem solved. It was the temp sending unit.
