temperature cycling

Hi,
This is my first post in a long time. Hope you can help.
My temp guage is "cycling" up and down. The temp goes up to mid way (normal) then slowly goes down to cool then back up then down. It has been doing this for 6 months. My belt tensioner broke off and I replaced it> the temp went way up so I wanted to relace the T stat. It still cylces. Any ideas ? Is anything wrong.
I also wanted to know if someone knew of greasable upper ball joints. The Ford ones dont last long and I want ones with a zert to grease.

Did you replace the radiator cap when you replaced the tstat?

I tried but my local dealers dont have any. I had to order one.

I replaced the rad cap and it is still doing it ???!!!
Someone mentioned maybe there is trapped air ?
How could I "burp" the system ??

I have changed the rad cap, changed the T stat (made sure the air vent hole is up, and it still "cycles".
I bought a temp sending unit but its too cold to put it on.
Does anyone have anymore suggestions ??

I would lay money its a bad temp sender.
Mine went south and scared the crap outta me, it pegged on the hot side when it warmed up but i could still grab the top rad hose with my bare hand.

It was $11.53 cdn. At my local dealer. For that price I thought I might as well change it !

I have just the oposite. Mine RARELY goes past 1/4 to the left. I dont think ive EVER seen it at half. The truck came from PA, so I wouldnt think they put a cold tstat in there, but who knows. I, too, am thinking it is a bad temp sensor. However, after driving the truck in 60 degree weather for 2.5 hours, the hood was still cold, so who knows. Ford and their nutty guages.

I have finished replacing the sending unit and its still "cycling" HELP !
Anyone out there with any other idea ?

Well what is left? These are the things that come to mind, but I am no mechanic.

I would check into to burping the system, but I would do it after checking these.

Check guage to make sure it is good, also could there be something in the wiring. I would check with a voltmeter and make sure that I am not getting surges of volts to the gauge cuasing it to bounce.

I don't know if it is possible, but you replaced the tensioner could the belt be causing this. I was wondering if the A/C clutch was coming on/off at the same time the gauge was bouncing? (just stuff that pops into my head)

hmmmm could be a bad water pump maybe????
does it do it when the heater controls are set to floor only? it maybe a a/c problem?!?!?! (the a/c compressor cycles even when turned off if the control is set to defrost), just giving you some ideas.

My X was cycling as well. Turned out to be a sticking T-stat. It was a Stant T-stat that I recall. Did this from brand new til aoubt six months after intsall before I changed to a Jet T-stat. No more cycling. I don't think the water pump has anything to do with a cycling temperature. When those go they go and you overheat.
