I have a 91 exploder with the infamous plastic cams in the auto hubs. I was wondering if there was a way to temporarily override this system to manually engage the hubs. I was thinking of some sort of spacer or something to spread the bits out to permanently engage the hubs for a while.
Has anyone ever done this before? I've never priced new metal cams and don't currently have the money for a manual conversion witch is what I would like to do and all I have ever found in wrecking yards is the plastic pieces.
It's been snowing here and 4wd would be nice to have.

I need to fix my hubs too. They work, well they work when they want to. But it doesn't really matter if you are 4wd or not, in downtown anyway...

I know how nice the auto hubs are in snow country -- just lock in and go -- but I'd just switch over to Warn manual hubs and forget it. They ALWAYS work.

Just lock them in if it looks like you might need 4WD. It won't really hurt anything and it is actually good to circulate the gears once in a while.

thanks for the replys so far. Ive been driving 4x4's all my life both on and off road and have never had so many problems as I have had with this exploder. So far I don't have any plans to get rid of it though. I'd like to take care of all of its little annoyances. I demand allot from my rigs, I drive them hard and expect them to stand up to my abuse. My plans are for a manual hub conversion when I get the money. Since this rig is also on its 3rd. a4ld trans I'd also like to swap in a 700r4 when I get the chance.
Mostly I was just interested in a temporary fix to get 4wd to work. the first time I took out one of these plastic rings I was out 'wheelin with some yotas. .............................quite embarrassing and annoying too. some form of temporary trail fix would have been nice then too. I'll have to have a look into one of the outer hubs tonight and see what I can come up with. I never have liked auto hubs on anything.
