TEMPORARY BASS

jl is over rated. their subs are good and may even be better than their competitions, but the recent (and unwarranted) hype surrounding their products has made them overpriced. that said they are good subs and if you want to spend a little extra to have something that has the hype (i.e. that hype equals a better value for you because you want to look cool). just dont' make the assumption that because it says jl on it that its better than offerings from other manufacturers in the same price range.

my friend has three jl's in his buick and they still don't hit as loud as my 2 15 inch rf punch he2 with an excellon 1600 watt amp. i'm hittin about 156 on the db meter which isn't too bad but i'm hoping to hit 160's with a couple more 15's

hey, you hit 156 with the he2 15s? thats what i'm using, can you tell me a little bit about your box? is it ported? what size ports etc. i just want to get a feel for what i'll be likely to hit.

btw- mine is sealed and 2.65 cubic feet per sub with an 800a2 amplifier. i'm trying to lean as much toward sound quality as possible with the install (because the spl is sort of inherent with the 15s and that much power)

was that a pro/legal meter mic you hit 156 on, sorry I just dont believe it with HE2's......

It was a pro meter. It peeked at 156 it was steady at about 154.5 to 155. The secret is a lot of soundproofing and a bolted down very strong box. Also they are being run by a 1600 watt amp. We just set it up and tested it recently and couldn't beleive the results 3 layers of dynamat extreme around the whole x does

more info please, i have very good sound deadening (even wood layers over all the openings in the hatch) and quite a few layers of sound deadening, and a very good box.

i really want the specs of your box though. all of the modeling i've done with mine has only suggested mid 140s. i never considered doing multiple ports or really large ports though so i didn't check it out. i want to know how comperable your set up is to mine? also, what is the exact specs of your amp?

First off, what kind of system do you have.

I have the excellon 1600 watt mono (KAC-X810D) with two power HE2 15's with a double baffle sound proofed box with the new alpine hu. I have the monster RCA cables top of the line with 4 guage wiring, z series speaker wire to dual voice coils, and everything dynamated except the headliner which i will be doing soon. The secret is me and my friend joe have had years of experience setting up systems and this one is our best yet, next we will be putting 4 15's in

the systems not done, but here's what i either have or will have soon

well, i have two layers of peal and seal crappy sound deadening all around(really all around everything) which isn't as good as the expensive brands but works- but the kicker is that i have a layer of 10mm mdf between the layers of peal and seal everywhere there was an opening in the sheet metal of the doors.

i also have all underhood wires upgraded to 0 gauge, new grounding strap, red top battery, 0 gauge to the rear, batcap 400, all solid gold/titanium from battery terminals to rings and distribution etc, then in my amp rack (out of site) the 0 gauge is split into 4 8 gauge and 2 4 gauge, the 4 gauge go to a batcap 400 and back, two of the 8 gauge to my 800a2 (which made 1041 watts at 14.4 on its birthsheet), one of them to my 500.2 rockford amp which powers my 3-way audiobahn carbon comp abc6003 components, and one 8 gauge to a 200s rockford amp powering 5 by 7 cerwin vegas (soon to be 6 by 9 audiobahns) for rear fill. my head unit is not yet upgraded from my pioneer dehp-4000 but it will be, my rca's are rockford fosgate and are top of the line.

my box is also extremely extremely solid and well built. my uncle and i spent about 10 hours on it and we know what we're doing. it has four coats of polyurethane on it inside and out as well as two coats of spray sound deadener and 5 lbs of polyfill on the inside.

i know i'm not pushing quite the watts that you are, but i think i have my bases covered alright. also, like i said before its 2.65 cubic feet per sub without the effect of the polyfill. i set it up for some sq rather than just spl like i said before.

would you please tell me how yours is set-up? specs of the box etc. i'm excited to hear that these subs have performed that well for someone else.

dude- your amp doesn't make 1600 watts... its rated for the actual output of my rf in fact.

Sooo do you have Power Hx2's or just HE2's, and by double baffle do you mean bandpass?? dont really get what your saying.....

where did he go?

had that same legacy amp and they are right it doesnt put out the same amount of power. I had it on two 12" pioneer 450w subs. It hit hard, i got many complements. Those subs wouldnt be able to handle the power from that amp. If i was you and had the money i would buy the amp then get some name brand subs.

i hit a 145db with one audiobahn 12 (aw1205x) and one audiobahn amp (A275HCX). total cost for the two was about $450 (then i had to get the other fun stuff like box, wiring, capacitors). all in all i prolly spent about $650, got a clean sounding system that doesnt take up too much space, hits hard, turns heads, and makes everybody say "damn!?!? thats ONE twelve??"

they are punch he2's sorry for the mixup. and double baffle meens 2 boards doubled up instead of just 1 board like typical boxes. if it was just one board thick, it would blow apart. which would be kinda cool to see. I still don't know how my friend joe got that system to hit so hard but he's a mirical worker.

cool! is it double 3/4 inch all the way around? that would have to be overkill right? or is it double of a smaller size? mine is 3/4" and it has all of the corners reinforced with an extra layer and three huge braces.

it's a total of 1 1/2 inches so it is a little overkill just to be one the safeside. and then theres 3M rubber undercoating inside.

did you use polyurethane? or did you figure the rubberized undercoating made it unecessary. iwasn't sure so i did both

the 3m stuff alone has always worked for me so i didn't think i needed it and i think i'm going to go ahead and get a new component set in my x. what do you suggest going with?

i'm getting the abc6003q audiobahns. they are 3-ways so they are sort of a b%%% to make fit (i'm having custom kick panels made for the 4" and the tweeter and mounting the 6.5 in my door)

i would recommend getting the abc6002q- just the two ways of the same as me.

you'll need to let me know how much power you have too, before i can really make a good recommendation.

also, there are many better brands out there and a lot of great deals to be had--- i just bought the audiobahns because they were the cheapest for the 3-ways and the power handling i needed (i'm using a 500a2 rockford amp so they'll be getting plenty of that)
