Texans to The Slabs Jan 27th,28th...Now with Link of writeup from 4wheelparts

Gerald I got rid of my cell phone awhile back! I guess just get ahold of Sin, thats whom we will call when we get to our hotel.

I just completed my rear tow hook install. I had a muffler shop install it for FREE. Great deal, I stayed clean. Anyways I also installed a 4 foot breather hose on my rear axle. I will show you guys how I did it. No water is getting in that puppy unless I am up to the windows in water (Rod :) Anyways, looking forward to it! Rod, what time does El Arroyo close on Friday nights? We will be there around nine or 9:30 then check in and clean up from the trip and will be more than ready for some food and drinks. Let me know! The Breather hose upgrade was only like 4 bucks.

Two Things

Hydrolock protection for $26.99
Here's another item you may want to put on your shopping list tonight if you are a wimp like me. I figure in 40 degree weather getting wet in cold river water would be uncomfortable, but there's no getting around the fact that all of us will be getting out of our vehicles a few times and getting wet. Brrrr.

I just went to Academy Sports and bought cheapo Chinese hip waders for only $26.99. I'm a short guy with an inseam of 32", and I have 33" tires. All I have to do is walk out into the river and if my crotch doesn't get wet I know my vehicle will make it across safely.

mav has a ’99 Eddie Bauer also. Mav, you may want to remove your foglamps tonight before coming up. Each one is held in with four small 8mm bolts. One on top needs a 3” extension on the socket to get to. It will be tough to get back on afterwards, so I never did reinstall that bolt and just use the others.

I do this for three reasons:

1) River crossings fill them up with muddy water that ruins them since it is impossible to completely clean the residue off the inside of the lenses once it is baked on. There is no way to get inside the lenses to clean them. You can only pour Windex into the little drain hole to get some cleaner in there and then swish it around.

2) The lamps are encased in a hard plastic mount that is not flexible, then bolted to the flexible lower bumper. When the lower bumper hits anything on the trail it flexes and shatters the non-flexible foglamp mount bolted to it.

3) The foglamp assemblies cost about $80 each.

I got tired of spending an extra $160 everytime I went wheeling.

Gerald thanks so much for the heads up on the waders. Brad and I went to a couple places and they wanted 45 to 85 bucks for the darn things. We will run over there now. You all might want to go to an auto zone and lengthen your breather lines. Its a two minute job and is very inexpensive. Gerald do these waders have the built on boot thing.

Gerald or Rod have you extended your diff breathers?

I found mine but they get lost with all the other wires and hoses and look pretty high to start out with.

Got my rear hook installed. Only problem is the hook fits behind the shackle about 4 inches so I think this will limit my flex. Looks clean. I'm ready!

Just got a digtal camera to so lotsa pictures this run.

Rod,

I need you to email me the directions to your house again. I might could find it, but I'm not sure. Jsut start with where I get off of 35N.

Thank you much

Rod,

Thanks for the directions. For breather extensions you can use any type of hose/tubing with a 3/8" inside diameter (that is the size for mine, should be for yours also). Most people use fuel hose or somehting similar because it is resistent to chemicals and abrasion. I found air hose at Lowes really cheap and used it. It is VERY thick and difficult to route, but it was cheap.

Ok guys this run is definetly AT YOUR OWN RISK. The good news is I just watched the weather report and it looks good, looks like the rain should not hit until Sunday afternoon. Some other good news is that it hasnt rained in over 1 1/2 weeks, so HOPEFULLY the water has receded enough.
I hope someone is already bringing the firewood. Everyone should try to bring a tarp, or if someone has one of those pop up shelter type cover things bring that also to cover our table and maybe our tents. Also, in the event of a storm in the middle of the night, we need to be able to break camp quickly, cause that water could come up quickly and bye bye campsite. Im not trying to scare anyone just be prepared for anything. We will just see how it is once we get out there. This should definetly be an adventure!

oh yaa if anyone has an extra little poker table bring that.
And Michael could you please bring your power inverter, I might need to charge up my video camera.

Thanks and see everyone Saturday!!

So don't bring mine? This run is for sure on your own risk. 50% of rain on Saturday the news said and like 60% on Sunday. Maybe it won't hit Kingsland though? Who knows.

Oh, and bring your ear protection 'cause my truck is LOUD!!! ;)

j/k, looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday.

Oh, Rod, is OConnor that street by the HEB? Just checking, 'cause I missed it last time. It's 620 to OConnor, then to Dorman, right? And Dorman is after 1 stop sign?
Thanks

Brian, Yeah they are full waders with boot bottoms. Chinese issue and way too cheap, I haven't tested their waterproofing yet, may learn the hard way :D

Keith, Yes, my breathers run up to my body a couple inches above the frame. I just relocated my back one. It was hooked to the bottom of the frame and I raised it up into my body lift about 8" higher. The front one already ends up above the framerail so I haven't extended it yet, but it's pretty high as is.

Everyone else,
Showers are forecast for Saturday while we are there and thunderstorms are forecast for Sunday. The danger in my mind is making it to Eagle Rock, playing all day Saturday, camping out, and then a storm feeds the river to shut us in with no way out once we are out there. Sinjin and I have already talked over that possibility on the phone. His last post is trying to nicely suggest a strong hint to the rest of you of that possibility.

Trcmagik has a fast deployed integral Explorer tent. I am not even bringing a tent; I'll be dropping my rear seat, using an inflatable mattress, and making a tent out of my vehicle. If a thunderstorm comes Saturday night I am out of Eagle Rock in minutes.

Just something for everyone to think about. I know you like to make fun of me and call me an old grump but the way I see it, the point of this thing is to have fun. All I ever meant by "lecturing" was to ask to please be prepared so we can all have a good time. I want to spend my time out there crawling rocks.

I remember my first time snowskiing. I wish that someone who had done that before had told me that I needed to bring a couple extra spare layers of thermals, that Thorlos are really warm to wear and your toes won't get so cold, etc. I had a blast my first snowskiing trip, but I got miserably cold a couple of times and had a hard time learning because I had the wrong equipment (a friend told me the best skiis, but they weren't the ones to learn on, they required much better ability to use). It would have been so much more fun if I only knew what to prepare for. That's all I mean when I post with suggestions about preparing for the trip. Unfortunately when I do so it comes across differently in the printed word and I sound like a grouch. I just want all you guys to be equipped enough to have a great time. If this ain't for fun then why bother to do it at all, right?

I guess you guys can tell by now that I am planning to tell my work to take a hike and I will do my best to go out and prerun the river for you all and make sure we can do this.
On to the positive. If we can be prepared, we will have great fun. We all know how well meterologists forecast Texas weather, right? Maybe we'll get no precip at all.

Who's bringing firewood? I'll bring starters for easy lighting and a couple of logs.

Whatever happens, we'll need lots of firewood.

PS: Do you youngun's REALLY want to play poker with me? Bring lotsa change with your firewood :D

PPS: Did I mention we'll need lotsa firewood?

Well said Gerald, call me when you 2 hours out, and I will meet you out at the slabs to prerun on Friday.

Alec,
Yep you got it correct, if you get lost though call me at home 512-255-7202
or cell 699-6493

Gerald if it stares raining I am with you on that one... I am taking off quickly. BTW: Do you want me to bring some firewood... :) (I'll be sure to bring some)

Also if any one needs it My Cell # is 361 655 0061 in work in Austin/round rock. But dies before getting to the Slabs.

One last thing I just want to remind any one with a spare CB to bring them I have one on order but have not go it yet.

Just a question: are y'all going to have your CB's on when you're driving in? It would be nice to gauge my CB range by calling you when I'm on my way up to RR. Oh well, no biggie.

Alec I will be at the Slabs on channel one waiting for you guys; that's the channel we use on major runs to separate us from all the other 'wheelers that always use channel 4.

BTW, did I mention we need firewood?

I'll see what I can do about firewood. And kudos to Gerald and Rod for scoping it out for us. Let's get it awn.
