Went wheeling tonight to test all the new gear out.

First off let me tell you lightly moded explorers can go damn near anywhere. Very cool stuff!

Problem. Friend got stuck in his lifted K5 blazer and I tried to pull him out and I had plenty of traction however my damn tires wouldn't even spin. Then some damn Jeep comes over with the 5.7L bald tires and low range pulls him out with mud flingin everywhere.

Also I noticed I went up a few steep hills tonight and I had to floor it just to crawl up them with the new bigger tires.

And I'm sick and tired of having to ride my brakes HARD going down stuff and making "brake cooling stops" so they don't fail and I fall down a cliff.

I'm gona start doing a few searches but if there are any threads or tips anyone can give me in this new quest please post them.

If I can't figure anything out I'll just put nitrous on the damn thing and a higher stall TQ converter.

Thanks

Lower gears will improve your performance alot. Riding the brack downhill hill is normal but im sure there is some brake upgrades you can do to help.

Maybe Warform will post in here. That guy has mad secrets up his sleeve.

well here's my wish list of possible things I can do easily to the truck.

4.10's front and rear (however thats semi-expensive and will Kill MPG even more)
Finding a higher stall TQ converter and having an even bigger tranny cooler with its own seperate fan.

Section I was reading some posts I found while searching, Did you do your 4WD conversion yet? I was trying to read Stadx2's but 1/2 his pictures are gone.

Nothin yet.. after going out again yesterday.. I'm getting more motivated. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=107148

I'm basically waiting for an easy manual tcase bolt up. But if that doesn't happen soon.. I'm thinking about going all out on an AA tcase. We'll see. Once summer gets here.. and I hit the trails more.. stuff will happen.

Warform.. where are you?

you need taller diff gears.

gears will help u shouldnt have to ride the brake down much things..like ever head of lions back?? if not search some of the zukis on zukiworld have to give it gas to get down it =)

mhn3773: I don't have a low range so I have to ride the brake when going down extremly steep slopes.

All of the wheeling spots we go to are on the benches of the local wasatch front mountains. Its not super easy things.

I think I may go the 4.10 route after some research today.

how hard is it to change the gears in the front?

I'd like to see you use nitrous when trying to pull out that Blazer :D

I wonder if it would look like a combination of that Geo video where there rearend got ripped off and the Back to the Future Delorean time traveling with the burning tire tracks..... The Blazer just gets ripped apart and the X flies back in time.

well at least my freaking tires would of spun! :)

Besides It would definatly be cool to just idle into a mud pit, hit the juice and blow mud everywhere. :)

The NP208 ended up being too wide, it fit between the frame rails but i'm afraid the output would be too far over.
I'm going to try out an NP205 now, just gotta wait for one to come up for a good price.
I'm also working on cutting down a HP D44 I got in my garage.

sweet. Keep me updated. I do have good news, I found 2 sets of 4.10' gears for less than 250$ and I can install them myself into the rear for free. I just have no idea how to rip the front apart.

I wonder since the trans in the truck has such wide gears anyway that my gas mpg might actualy improve.

Are your gears so high that you can't even trans-brake by putting the gear selector in first?

well thats already how I wheel is by locking it in 1st.

but only so much can happen now with 32's 3.73's stock gearing and no 4-low.

A transbrake is designed to let the TQ converter to spin up to its stall level and get you more RPM. But when your climbing a hill that you'd be scared to even walk up you already are maxing out the TQ converter just to move.
