Hmmm... where to start. bought '91 4WD EB w/ 207k miles two weeks ago. Had sat for 2-3 years w/o running. Started right up after new battery (shorted) and alternator (was 11.5 volts max). Alas, car would not move in any gear or direction. Noted that transmission had 3" too much fluid on dipstick. Siphoned out 1 gallon or so with a hand pump; was slightly over full at that point.

Towed X home with engine running (60 min.) and for fun tried to park it under its own power. Surprise, it worked. Drove it around the neighborhood and X would go forward but only with late shifts into first (lotsa revs) and in general lots of intermittent slipping.

Removed vacuum modulator expecting to see fluid in vacuum line but line was dry (darn). Modulator diaphragm does not hold vacuum so I will put a new modulator in anyway. Local parts shop shipped wrong part (darn x2) so waiting till Tuesday for correct one (it came out VERY easily; I will post photos of this in a few days in a separate posting).

Checked transmission fluid today and nothing registered on dipstick. (huh?) How did that happen? No leaks evident (I was looking for them due to having had so much fluid; I thought a seal or two should have been blown).

Pulled transmission pan just now to check bands, install a drain plug, and change the filter. Not much fluid inside; maybe (at most) 1.5 quarts. Fluid that was there smelled burned and was between red and brown in color.

Vacuum line from intake manifold to modulator appears intact but I have not checked with gauge. Will order a transmission pressure gauge next Monday, so do not know those numbers yet.

What are the symptoms of a clogged trans. oil cooler? Where did that fluid go?

If you suspect that the transmission cooler is clogged, you could always bypass it for a few moments - in other words, connect the input and the output lines of the cooler to each other temporarilly.

It shows more fluid when it is checked when it is hot. When you thought that it was over filled, was it checked when it was cold? If you suspect that the cooler is clogged, then disconnect both lines, and use a special spray that is called coor cleaner. Here is some information on it: M465KD Transcool cooler cleaner spray ($7.09). It is available from any place that sells transmission parts.
