I have a 1999 Explorer Sport with V6 SOHC. Its tick tick tick noise started at about 40k miles and gotten worse by 97k. It also has a cold start idle/left bank lean problem. If you are lucky enough to have not had these problems please don't tell me about it.

As far as I can tell, these problems not covered by recall. I have asked dealers and they will not acknowledge anything.

I have the Explorer WORKSHOP MANUAL, which lists; CONDITION engine noise, POSSIBLE SOURCE damaged timing chain tensioner (6L266), ACTION replace timing chain tensioner. If anyone has experience with this, please get back to me.

Also, the cold start problem. If anyone has experience with this, please get back to me.
Thanks

There is a well know TSB on your engine where the fix is replace the some timing chain components. The timing chain tensioner I believe in fact.

Timing chain tensioner

Hello Explorerman1,

you told us the ticking sound got worse. Wenn does it occur??

Sec timing chain rattling, is mostly when starting the engine a few seconds.
Prim timing chain rattling is between 2600-2800 rpm. It sounds like it is coming from behind the radio.

I had it fixed, and the rattling is complety gone! The only swoped the tensioner(prim) !
